what are your running mantras?

Specifically to people who run, What is the thing you repeat over and over in your head to keep yourself from stopping?

One of my friends says he just repeats in his head "Pick your feet up, Pick your feet up".

I've been using that and it helps. I also repeat "Do what you've always done and you'll get what you've always gotten."

Curious what works for you all?

Best, Zoe

When I REALLY want to stop, I keep repeating "harden the *kitten* up, harden the *kitten* up" in my head.

Maybe not the nicest thing to say to myself, but it works!

When I am slightly tired I tell myself, "You can stop now and feel terrible about it or you can push yourself farther and be proud."
When I am really tired I tell myself, "Don't wuss out. FINISH IT!"

I'm a new runner, just now moving (slowly) from 5k to 10k. I have a hard time with the first few k before things seem to loosen up and I find my groove, so I usually say to myself, "You WILL feel awesome, you WILL feel awesome!" and, at the end, I do!!

" it's all in your head- the body has no control - the brain controls your body- if you think you can do it- you will do it.. it's all in your head.. you can do it.. forget the pain.. it's only in your head.. " lock out the pain.. forget it- breath.. push..

I start calculating the percentage of the run I've done.. then my average speed...then how fast I'd have to run to cut by time by 5 minutes...anything that keeps my mind off how tired I am! I'm a bit of a maths geek :glasses:
I also remember when I crossed the finish line of my half marathon and how amazing it was. Relive it and I get that same buzz a lot of the time which is great!

I am also a very new runner. So far I have said things like "Just keep running" (similar to the "Just keep swimming" line from Finding Nemo) and also I think of those Chilean miners stuck in the ground for all those weeks and months. If they can survive that, I can surely finish this run!

Lol, I do the same thing! I also think that each step I take gets me one step closer to my final destination.

i tell myself 'just a little further, just a little further'. 'little' can mean lots of things apparently (from one more minute to one more mile). :)
  • "You can do it, You can do it, it's not that bad, you've been through worse pain and made it." or some variant of this. I also play the game..."just make it to that light post, OK you made it here no problem now just make it to that fire hydrant."

I tell myself a few things:

"you've done this before, you can again!"
"you've been through much worse, YOU CAN DO THIS!"
"500 meters isn't that far - keep going you'll get there, you can see it"
    "Don't give up, you're not a quitter!"
"It's all in your head - your body CAN do this :)"
"You're training for "x", you want to be ready - now's the time to see what you can do!"
"We are so awesome!! We are probably the only ones right now, where we live, that's running "x" amount of kms this morning! Most people are probably still in bed!"

I also sometimes count (especially on my tempo runs) I'll count my breaths, or how many steps I am taking. It keeps my mind out of the negative places. Also, I sometime sing some songs like "1 and 1 we're having some fun in the bedroom, all day, and all of the night" etc... :) Don't know if anyone remembers that - but it makes me smile and I make my running partner participate :)

Thanks everyone! I could read these all day long- interesting look into other people's heads!
  • I was going to post the same question - but decided to revive this thread instead!

What are your running mantras? Mine aren't too inspiring for anyone else - but works extremely well for me...

    ---UP HILL---
    "Push it!"
    "C'mon B1tch!"
    I blogged about this - http://www.myfitnesspal.com/blog/R4z0r4Mm0/view/i-am-a-runner-244-days-to-go-149006

    --DOWN HILL--
I actually CLAP for myself - two quick claps... clap-clap.. then I go

--STRAIGHTS-- to keep me focussed on my pace
I click my fingers on both hands... click-click-click.. and that resets my mind and pace.
