there is no 'best diet'... no diet is any good... learning portion control and developing a healthy lifestyle wth some regular exercise is the best way to get the weight off and keep it off.

What worked for me when I was losing weight was to calculate my TDEE - 15% and eat those cals. Calorie deficit basically is what worked for me ... I did not eliminate anything from my diet but accounted for it in my calorie intake. I wanted pizza, I ate it. My workouts were at least 4 - 6 times per week.

I wanted to ensure that I could maintain a lifestyle that I can adapt throughout my lifetime and this seems to be working for me.

I am at my goal weight and have been maintaining for a couple months well. I'm now focusing on body recomp as I still want to do some tweaking here and there.

Calorie deficit is what makes you lose weight. Exercise makes you look good :)

I started off with 30 day shred and then moved on to other programs. Yotube has lots of workouts as well.

    Good luck

  • HI! While I agree that no "diet" is good because of the limitations and difficulty maintaining them long-term, there is a "diet" that I've found to be healthy and sustainable for the long term. It's the Abs diet. It doesn't limit anything. In fact, it gives you 12 heathy foods (or food categories rather) t to include every day to be satiated. The 12 foods are; Almonds & Nuts, Beans & Legumes, Spinach and Veggies, Dairy (low fat), Instant Oatmeal, Eggs, Turkey & Lean Meat, Peanut Butter, Olive Oil, Whole Grains, Extra Protein (whey or casein protein powder), Raspberries and other berries. See! It's not limiting at all - except sugars and saturated fats. It does encourage a cheat meal a week - whatever you want, so you won't become de-motivated and crave awful food. The smoothies in the book are amazing also. They are thick smoothies (some with a scoop of ice cream even), and you'll feel super full. One smoothie a day is what they recommend, then 5 other small solid meals.

    Good luck!

The best diet is what works for you.

If you think you can do portion control for life, do that.
If you think you'd do better lower carb, do that.
If you think you'd do better LEARNING on a formal diet, choose one that's nutritionally sound, then adopt the primary principles for life.

The best diet is what works for you. For life.

We're all experts here at losing weight. The key is figuring out how to maintain.

Oh, and be healthy. Little detail there.

The OP and cwolfman's post on this thread make the most sense to ME personally:
    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/1406186-calories-always-count-but-don-t-always-have-to-be-counted

Note that he has personal "rules". He learned those "rules" along the way. That's the key. Call em "rules", call em "guidelines", "principles" whatever. And then follow them.

Mine, these last 13 years, look a lot like his.

The best "diet" (I detest that word) is a lifestyle change that will accomodate everything and anything you like to eat in moderation, whilst fitting your calories and nutritional requirements as well as keeping you saturated without odd cravings.

I don't believe in "guilty pleasures" or "cheat meals" at all, but when I eat it should be nice and neutral, fuel most of the time and with the occasional "treat".

As for practical advice, you already received calorie info and links to recommended reading.

Thank you for bringing up that thread! An excellent thought for when I eventually hit maintenance. :)

So TDEE - 20% is approx. 1760 for you. I'd start there, and see how you feel. (If you're hungry, if you're losing, etc)

The best diet is one that meets all your nutritional needs, fuels your workouts, gives you energy for the rest of the day on top of your workouts, sharpens your mind, puts you in a good mood, and leaves you feeling full and satisfied.

It's up to you to try different foods in different combinations until you find what that diet is.
