Aaaah! When Will it Stop?

I see this kind of crap every time I go to the store!
I guess as long as people are willing to believe that a magic pill will solve all of there problems, people will continue to buy into these snake-oil schemes. What is truly frustrating is that, barring some medical conditions, it is not that difficult to lose weight: get up and move, and eat with a calorie deficit. It is not instantaneous, and requires some work and commitment, but it is very straightforward and fairly simple.

I'm right there with you. And I think "First" is one of the worst for promoting these sort of products and plans on every cover. As long as people continue to by the magazines and products, it will never stop.

Practically every woman's magazine is devoted to ways to make you look sexy FAST with little to no effort. Just do this one thing/eat this one food. Tada! The entire industry is built on lies and deception. People still buy this crap.

I do. Most people aren't really educated about food, activity and nutrition. Then they see a Doctor they are familiar (and maybe comfortable) with and see the words "natural" and assume it's a) effective and b) safe.

I knew very little about how to take care of myself before I decided to lose weight. While I never fell for any sort of "diet schemes" in the past, I can totally see why and how other people would.

Have you ever actually read one of those diets? They usually give you a week's worth of meal plans. They're healthy meals, just like you're supposed to eat, with lean meats, fruits and veggies, and whole grains. They may contain more of a certain kind of food (maybe all orange veggies), or maybe a specific way to prepare it (soup or smoothies), but they really aren't "snake oil". If a diet is a little "out there", the magazine has a dietitian revise it to make it realistic and healthy. They also tout exercise. Honestly, if you followed each diet they put in there for the week's worth of meals they give you (one magazine per week = one diet per week), you'd have the same results you would get by following MFP. There are only so many foods that are available to us, and only so many ways to prepare them. These diets aren't coming up with anything new.

The cover is written in such a way as to get people to buy the magazine, that's all. The line used comes from the accompanying story, and may be something like, "Studies with lab rats showed them to burn 229% more fat...when used in conjunction with injections of hormone x), however they edit it for the cover. The story then usually goes on to say, "even though you may not be able to get the hormone injections, as they haven't been approved for use in humans, you can get nearly the same results by following the food plan." Even if the results are nowhere near "229% more fat burned", people following the diet will, at least for that week, be eating a little healthier.

Same here. I think they must know in the back of their heads it's nonsense.

My main issue with those is all the 'lose weight fast' advice, and it all comes with some picture of random yummy recipe on the front page. Totally boggles my mind.
