Eat more calories!

Ok, now I know my body is not where I want it to be and I am by no means perfect, in fact I'm considered obese, but for the love of all that is holy - when I see posts where people are saying they need to up their calories to 1500...I'm like, what they hell are they at now! I have lost 11 pounds recently, not due to my caloric intake decreasing, but due to my exercise increasing.
When they build a gym literally right behind your house, then you really have no excuse to not get up off your *kitten*. But please, people, for the love of God, there is no reason for you to be eating less than 1500 at the very least.
This is suppose to be about health and fitness, not anorexia. There is a point ladies, where if you don't eat enough calories and you are already thin, that you're not going to menstruate. Now I know I'm not one to talk about the perfect health regiment, and I'm not at all where I want to be fitness or health wise, but I am implementing small meals throughout the day, healthy snacks like fruits, nuts, and salads - and then I usually have a large protein with veggies for dinner. But please, as someone who has studied the human body for as long as I have, eat more food. Just make it healthy.
These posts about eating 1000 calories a day, just make my heart hurt. Do your research by a reputable doctor or go see a nutritionist! Not one medical professional is going to recommend eating 1000 - 1400 cals a day.
Ok, I'll get off my soap box now.

Preface: I'm certainly not a health professional.
Not to get overly nit picky, but medically supervised VLCDs aren't unheard of. This is particularly true for individuals who are morbidly obese.
I do agree that one should probably seek the advice of a medical professional. I'd also agree that VLCDs are probably frequently counter-productive for the general populace trying to lose weight for a variety of reasons.0 -
I would tend to agree that most people could easily lose weight and eat a bit more...problem is that most are in a rush and just want to go as fast as possible. Biggest issue I see is complete lack of dietary adherence with overly aggressive calorie goals...particularly for those with little weight to lose...those are the ones that concern me the most.
That said, having been here for 2ish years, I've pretty much given up this fight...if people want to deprive themselves and see how low they can go, it's know skin off my back...most of them will ultimately fail anyway.0 -
I'm short so to maintain my weight I would need to eat around 1800 cals so a 500 per day deficit (3500 per week = 1lb) puts me at 1300 cals I exercise so I can eat more (plus I'm enjoying exercising) I'm never hungary and my diet is very balanced. My portions are just smaller.
If I ate 1500 cals a day yes I would lose weight but it would be at a much slower rate and sorry but I don't want to spend another two years losing weight. I have changed my lifestyle and my healthy habits will contain after I have lost the weight to keep it off but I don't want to carry this unhealthy weight around for longer than neccessary 1lb a week is a healthy and sustainable weight lose.0 -

You realize the NIH has a page that states:In general:
Eating plans that contain 1,000–1,200 calories each day will help most women lose weight safely.
Eating plans that contain 1,200–1,600 calories each day are suitable for men and also may be appropriate for women who weigh 165 pounds or more or who exercise regularly.
You also realize that many doctors put patients on 1200 calorie diets to lose weight and that VLCD's are not uncommon for morbidly obese patients, which go down to 600-800 calories (perhaps even lower) per day. You also realize that people typically eat around 300 calories and no more than 1000 calories for months after weight loss surgery?
I could go on, and I would wholeheartedly agree that these numbers are NOT recommended for everyone and sometimes doctors are overly aggressive with their recommended caloric deficits (as they understand the health risks of being obese), but don't let look yourself look silly by broadly proclaiming that no medical professional would EVER recommend 1000-1400 calories per day.0 -

so in reality, you do maintain on more than 1800 calories per day then....with exercise and all.
My wife is short as well...with exercise she maintains on roughly 2200 - 2300 calories per day...she can easily lose about 1 Lb per week eating around 1,700 calories (500 calorie deficit) which is roughly equivalent to her maintenance number if she didn't exercise. You have to factor in that exercise. She can lose a good 1.5 Lbs per week if she ate 1500 calories. She has some rockin' muscle so she would start to lose that in a hurry with anything less.0 -

Really??? My dr did!!!!! I'm not sure why you are such a high horse about it! My dr, who is a general practitioner, but definitely knows what he is talking about told me to eat 1200.... He said if I don't l lose weight after a month, go down to 1100 etc!! He said there are people who he has put on 600!
I think you are generalising about things you don't seem to know much about!
Go back and study the condition PCOS, or being steroids, or any other condition or meds that make it very difficult to lose, and then come back tell us how many calories people should be eating!!!0
