You've got to eat more fibre! Its essential for all

I watched this science program yesterday. Australians can watch it on abc iview. Its catalyst and the episodes (2) are called Gut Reaction.

Here's my rough notes from the show.:

gut bacteria effects our health and immune system. gut bacteria makes us stronger . This was shown.

and our health and gut bacteria is affected by how we are born - e.g. caesarian, whether or not we are breastfed or bottle fed. These babies miss out on essential gut bacteria from their mothers.

and what we eat. low fibre meals. low fibre responsible for a long list of diseases

people who eat more fibre live longest

antibiotics also change gut bacteria. its like a nuclear bomb for gut bacteria is. particularly bad for young children. Probably the causes of allergies and asthma in children.

westerners haven't got a diverse gut bacteria compared to the hudza tribal of africa who eat a high fibre diet. between 50 and 200 grams per day. Most westerners eat less than 20grams per day. They compared the hudza because 90% of their current diet is still the way its always been.

acetate is a natural anti-inflammatory. It comes from eating vinegar. So eat more salads but especially eat more fibre because fibre is turned into acetate short chain fatty acids. The show showed how acetate works in the body to prevent inflammation. Inflammation diseases: asthma, diabetes, rheumatoid arthritis and others.

high fibre shown to reduce asthma in mice

fibre creates more good gut bacteria

the ant inflammatory chemicals help prevent inflammatory diseases alike asthma

Sources of fibre: vegetables and fruit, beans, chickpeas, lentils, nuts and seeds, whole grains

Now go and do some research of your own into the importance of gut bacteria for health. And eat more fibre. The more the better, clearly.

This was awesome! I found parts 1 and 2 on Youtube even though I'm in the USA so couldn't watch from the direct site. Thanks for posting about it.

I've been feeling so much better and more energetic and even noticing better moods since I started eating large amounts of fruits and vegetables.

I think after watching this I'm going to throw some vinegar into my roughage, too, just for giggles and because maybe it will do me some good. Especially since I have horrible seasonal allergies. Never know, maybe it will help. Can't hurt, and I'm fine with the taste. But mostly I'm just delighted over having changed my diet. Well, most of me is delighted. My wallet is crying.

ha ha about the wallet. I'm spending more on food too but i don't mind. Food is fast becoming one of my deeper pleasures. The money is worth it.

its great you found the video on you tube i should have a look too.

Although i've written that acetate is vinegar, don't forget that the body turns fibre into acetate so while its good to eat a little bit more vinegar, its more important to eat a lot more fibre because there's only so much vinegar we can reasonably consume and anyway i think the fibre probably has a range of benefits. But its sounds like you are doing that too.

A cheap source of fibre is beans, lentils and chickpeas. Buy them dried mainly and for variety go shopping in an indian store. the diversity is amazing as are the variety of dishes that can be put together. The indians know all about this type of food.

I get as much fiber in a day as I can, but my calorie goals are low, so even though I'm mostly meeting USA recommended, to get anywhere near the amount these guys think our ancestors ate I'd apparently have to go way over or eat the table. So vinegar can't hurt. Plus I like the taste. I used to use it often, then seemed to forget it existed!
