Carb loaded and sleepy

Now that I am really paying attention to what I eat and when I eat it I have realized that I get a nasty salt craving in mid afternoon. So then I eat some fat free pretzels or reduced fat triscuits or similar crunchy, salty stuff.

My problem is that during the past week or so I feel so tired after the carbs. I mean really, really sleepy. Watery eyes, yawning. I just want to curl up under my desk.

Does this happen to anyone else?

Does anyoen have suggestions on filling my salty, crunchy craving with something that doesn't put me in a semi-coma?

This used to happen to me...I found out I was allergic/sensitive to wheat. I would feel like I'd been hit by a truck after I had wheat, even whole wheat. And moody, oh Lord, moody.

I find that I can have baked corn tortilla chips with no problems. Another favorite of mine is "soycrisps", which are made with rice and soy flour. They come in barbecue flavor, which does it for me as I always have a "saltysweetcrunchy" craving. As a bonus, they also have protein in them, so I get a little pre-workout boost in the afternoon.

    Thanks Viviakay!
This is very Interesting. So how do I find out if I am allergic or sensitive? Do I have to see a doc?

Good tips on snacks. I'll give your suggestions a try.

I went to a naturopath, after "regular" doctors wanted to put me on meds for depression and anxiety. She did a "meridian" test.

But, I think I could have found out the same thing on my own by doing the following, which she suggested I do to confirm her diagnosis.

Quit wheat and wheat products for a week, or better yet two. Warning: this may make you a bit crazy as your body craves what it doesn't know how to process (weird but true). Wheat is also hidden in a lot of foods. The most common code word in an ingredient list is "malt" . There are lots of subs, brown rice pasta is very tasty (I like it better than the whole wheat pasta) and corn is allowed. I also have to eliminate barley, rye, oats and spelt. After a few weeks, have a small serving of something wheat. If you feel TERRIBLE (I normally avoid all-caps, but descriptive here) you probably have a sensitivity. I get very bloated (within an hour of getting "glutened" in something I didn't read carefully) cranky and tired.

I'm sorry if I sound a mite preachy, but this diet change has changed my life! I now have so much more energy all the time, and my lifelong battle with depression and anxiety has almost dissapeared.
Also, I do not have the "junky sweet cravings" I used to have, which were so bad I couldn't control them at all.

Also, your doggie. I want to pet it. So cute.

Thanks about my doggie, Sammy. She is the sweetest, cuddliest, best friend ever. Since she is a Chesapeake Bay Retreiver, she is my swimming partner all summer. Alas, she is getting old and now tires easily.

I think I will try the test. If you found out that you are sensitive and you have eliminated it and you feel that great, it is worth it for me.

THANK YOU - the emphasis is appropriate!

you could also substitute with nuts...a small amount gives the added bonus of making you feel less hungry for longer. Also good way to get the extra Omega-3s

When I eat pretzels and white flour at work I fight falling asleep!
    Carbs make me sleepy!
I bring roasted almonds or celery with pnut butter or organic popcorn!
    Good luck!

You are in a carb coma. Try other snacks. Almonds, egg whites, even gummy bears are better than the carbs sometimes.

Hmm, is it just me or does it seem like 2007 posts were a whole lot friendlier than now. Not so sure about the advice given but the exchange was delightful.
