Unexplained Weight Gain??

I have been using MFP since late March. My beginning weight was 250 lbs (I'm only 5'8"). As of this past Monday, I had lost down to 205.9 lbs - the smallest I've been in 12 years! I feel so much better, and I've been encouraged by the steady loss.

I've had 2 knee surgeries in the past and jogging has always caused me pain when I was so heavy. I gave it another try this week, and I've been able to jog/walk with no pain at all which is great! The problem is this - I exercised Monday, Tuesday, and Thursday so far this week.....AND I'VE GAINED 4 LBS!!

I went back and checked my calorie intake over the past few weeks. MFP has me at 1560/day; however, the past 4 weeks my average calories per day have been at 982, 1366, 894, and 888. I've had some stressful stuff going on and really didn't feel like eating much.

Can anybody offer any advice or suggestions about what is going on with my body? I can handle plateaus in weight loss, but the sudden gain of 4 lbs in 5 days has been pretty discouraging!

  • I am by no means an expert, but when you begin an exercise program, it is natural for your muscles to retain some water. After you continue, your body will release it. I believe it to only be a reaction to your new routine.
  • I experienced this when I first began heavier weight training, it took a while for the weight to come back off, but it did eventually. You definitely need to be eating more though. And make sure you are drinking a lot of water! Hoping for the best for you, good luck! And I want to add congratulations on your weight loss so far, that is awesome!
  • Thanks for the quick responses! I've been drinking tons of water (I only drink water) since it's been so hot here this week. I was thinking that it might just be some water retention, but it's good to hear from somebody else lol.

It's so weird trying to eat MORE calories! I've struggled with my weight since I was 11 or 12 years old (I'm 40 now). I've always had the opposite problem of trying to eat FEWER calories lol!
