Morning vs. Evening Weight

Hi All - I joined MFP 5.5 weeks ago and have lost 13 lbs!! Yay!! I really appreciate all the support and encouragement. I have a question though about weighing oneself...

...I weigh myself every morning, as soon as I wake up and go to the bathroom, though I *officially* log my weight on Tuesday mornings. Just for kicks, the last few evenings, I've weighed myself just before I go to bed, and I'm about 2lbs heavier in the evening than I was in the morning!!

Is it normal to be 2 lbs heavier just before you go to bed then you were in the morning??

I'm usually heavier at night as well. I think it's food and water.

First of all, congrats on your loss!! Great job!!

Second, yes, most people seem to weigh more later in the day than they do first thing in the morning. My weight sometimes fluctuates up 2 to 5 lbs in the afternoon/evening. It has to do with the fluids/foods you consume throughout the day. That's why weighing consistently is key to tracking your progress accurately. It doesn't matter when/how you weigh, just keep doing it the same way. For example, I weigh every morning, naked, after going to the bathroom. I've been doing that since I started nearly 2 years ago. It keeps me on track. So, regardless of your weigh-in routine, just keep it consistent and you'll do fine. Good luck as you move forward!!

It is normal for weight to fluctuate during the day. The weight in the morning is before you eat or drink anything, once you start eating and drinking, it starts to affect your weight.

Perfectly normal. I weigh right when I get up and two hours later when I get back from the gym I'm heavier. It's water and food and poop.

Totally normal. You retain fluid throughout the day. You also eat during the day. These things make your weight go up. I've fluctuated 7lbs in one day before.

Congrats on your success. Keep doing what you're doing and you'll be fine.

Absolutely! Just to keep me on track, because I'm a little obsessive...I won't say I reached my goal weight until I'm that weight in the afternoon. I'm literally 2 pounds heavier later in the day. Just keeps me on my toes! My scale is ready my goal weight in the morning right now but I don't log it yet. It's fluctuating too much.

  • Awesome! Thanks for the replies everyone! I've been weighing food and tracking very carefully and am quite proud of my success thus far, but then started getting a little worried thinking I was missing something.

I will keep on, keepin' on!! :)

I'm sometimes 5lb heavier so I never step on the scale at night
