YUP. Definitely get your thyroid checked. I was tired ALL THE TIME, like 3 PM fatigue so bad I had to think "one leg in front of the other, one leg in front of the other" just to walk back to the train station after class. Sleeping 9-10 hours helped sometimes, but not for long. Turns out I'm hypothyroid!

If it's not a medical problem, it might mean:
    1) You're not eating enough. Before anyone jumps down my throat for this, I just mean that sometimes people will post that they eat like 1000 calories and that is just really not enough for many adults to survive on.
    2) Exercise can help! Try going for a walk, or a jog or doing stretches (or yoga or pilates or whatever) first thing in the morning! When I start my day with exercise, it's better than coffee.

    For me...

    * I have Hashimoto's Thyroiditis, so I get my thyroid levels checked regularly and take synthetic thyroid replacement
    * I am on 4 prescription medications that decrease metabolism and/or increase appetite. The benefits of taking the medications outweigh the cost of having to work a little harder at the gym and watch my caloric intake closer.

    In general...

    * Don't starve yourself or go too low on your caloric intake, or supposedly it will slow your metabolism (your body will burn muscle and not fat)
    * Get your intake of Omega 3 fatty acids (helps regulate blood sugar, reduce inflammation - which is supposed to increase your metabolism). Source: http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20306911_3,00.html
    * Lift weights - muscle burns more calories than fat
    *Don't skip breafast. Source: http://www.health.com/health/gallery/0,,20306911_8,00.html

There are lots of reasons for being tired - some have nothing to do with "metabolism". See a doctor to find the reason.
