I don't do anything that emphasizes one type of food over another.... I eat in balance the best I can... eating healthy is pretty simple. We all know what foods are healthy and which ones aren't. Pick the healthy ones and eat them. Does someone really need to tell you that a diet of cheeseburgers and deep-fried Twinkies is not healthy? People pick these contrived diets so they can placate their taste buds and convince themselves they are eating healthy. Paleo might work if you actually spent every day of your life foraging for plants and berries and running for hours with a sharp stick to chase down wild animals so you didn't die of starvation, but most people on the diet these days run around in their specialized running shoes or cross-trainers and are like "Oooh... I can eat all the bacon I want!"0

Not for me, I do love all the food groups. But search the groups - you'll find support there, I think there is an active paleo support grou - you'll get a bit of stick on the general boards.0 -
My humble opinion:
First - I dislike the term diet... Diet for most means temporary (until such time that one reaches a specific goal)... I like the term life change...
Second - A few work associates of mine utilized the Paleo Diet to reach specific goals and their results were unbelievable... Course, eating healthy tends to do that for everyone...
Third - I believe the Paleo Diet (if followed in it's entirety) will provide the results you seek... What I would do, while you relearn healthy eating habits (while on Paleo) is to research new (permanent/sustainable) healthy meals that will replace your old eating habits...
Fourth - Variety is key to long term success along with a balance of Protein, Carbs, Fats and Fiber... Watch Sodium intake and drink plenty of water...0 -
I second the idea to check out the groups. On a general forum, it's discussion from anyone who wants to chime in, and a lot of threads do eventually get derailed. The groups are a more hospitable environment for specific interests. :flowerforyou:0

Your fourth point is all that's needed, period.0 -

I doubt one persons definition of variety is the same as another's!0 -

First, are you doing Paleo or Primal? They are two different things. Second, what results are you hoping for?0 -

This.
My brother tried it and started losing weight, but then fell into this trap. He stopped losing weight and eventually realized that his diet mainly consisted of bacon and "paleo pizza". He started eating normal food again and focused on whole foods while limiting/eliminating things like sugar (real AND artificial) which naturally meant that he wasn't eating pre-packaged foods that came out of a box. He started losing again... go figure.
His father-in-law on the other hand, also did paleo but approached it from a more realistic perspective. Bacon was a weekend treat, vegetables were eaten more often than fruit but no amount or type of fruit was ever restricted, and lentils have a nutritional breakdown that is far superior to any "paleo pancake" recipe you will ever find anywhere.
Some people need the energy/motivation of a NEW THING, or they need tight structure to keep themselves under control.
If you are the type who would overeat bacon and replace pancakes with paleo pancakes, just to stay "on plan", you might want to rethink paleo as an option. If you are using it to try to eat clean, but you need the structure of a strict rule system to keep you in line, go for it. If you know what you need, and you can foresee the potential pitfalls, you can make it work for you. Treat it as a learning experience, not a cure-all.
Edit: I am currently on week 2 of a modified version of The Whole 30, and I quite like it. It is forcing me to be more inventive with my food choices and I have been enjoying food more as a result.0 -

I do primal - I find it really easy and I have lost 33lb in 8 months (steady loss).
I've not logged one piece of food in that 8 months and have just eaten when I am hungry.
I have also not denied myself any food I really fancied - If I fancy a pizza from time to time - then pizza it is (and no not the cauliflower crust stuff).
It's not for everyone, but then neither is the moderation path.
If you are interested give it a go. Good luck.0 -

Variety within the realm....meeting at 11:00 to discuss tabu ingredients.....got it.0 -

If you are thinking of trying an extreme, restrictive diet, please surround yourself with like minded people. Otherwise you may find said diet is a terrible idea.0 -

Paleo is restrictive, but I don't think it's extreme. (I don't follow a Paleo diet.) If Paleo is a terrible idea for OP, she'll find out from trying it, no harm to her done.

Some do well with restrictive diets, others don't.0 -

I tried a number of different diets. I did Paleo for a while. I lost about 15 pounds on it but ultimately got really bored and "wandered off".
I eventually just started watching calories and exercising. This is the first thing that I have done that feels like I could do it forever.0 -
There are some paleo folks in here. I do keto, which is similar, but I can eat some things that the paleo folks can't. Just a head's up. There are people on here who ridicule and criticize those who DARE to eat differently than they do. They will come in here and pretty much derail your topic. Be prepared for it.0

Woah, thanks everybody. I hadn't looked at this post since last night when I posted it. I read everyone's comments and learned from all of you. Am going to go search for Paleo groups right this second. Thanks again!0

I did Paleo, and lost 30 pounds last year. And promptly gained it back. I found it too restrictive for me. I prefer Eat Clean myself.0

Your brother wasn't doing paleo if that's all he did. *****ing about lack of results when he wasn't eating clean like paleo requires is asinine. Paleo allows bacon, but you can't eat it all the time. You still have to eat at a deficit to lose weight, regardless of the diet. The success stories for paleo are readily available, as are numerous sites detailing how to correctly eat a paleo diet. Paleo isn't for everyone, but then again no diet is right for everyone. If you want to try paleo, try it. Give it an honest attempt and I guarantee if you're following the guidelines you'll lose weight.0 -
This was exactly my point.
My brother started out well, followed the diet and was successful, but fell into a rut and back into old, unhealthy habits.
It is all about the individual, their habits, personality, needs, and motivation.
My brother didn't *****, he realized that, given his personality, HE couldn't stay on paleo. He noticed the lack of progress, realized it was his own damn fault, and changed his approach to weight loss.
His father in law realized that HE could stay on paleo, but only if he made slight adaptations to it in order for it to fit into HIS lifestyle and support his needs.0
