It certainly creates more of a calorie deficit, and eating less than you burn is what causes weight/fat loss.

However, exercising twice a day seems to be overdoing it a bit--at least for me.

Timing for food or exercise means little to nothing. It's a cumulative effort.

Exercising twice/day won't necessarily get you better results. If you're saving up for a second workout, you'll hold back on your first. I would focus more on putting everything you have into your first workout and burning out. Then focus on your nutrition for the rest of the day. You'll get plenty of results this way. This is what I did, and I was losing an average of 2 lbs/week while I was losing weight.

This is about it. Years ago, for a short while, I split my workouts due to my schedule- weight lifting in the morning and a run at night. I'll tell you, I hardly had much to put into my run because of the weight lifting earlier in the day. This did not last long.

A downside to "burning out" is it can reduce one's activity level the rest of the day. It also increases appetite and increases the risk of overeating, since willpower goes down when fatigued. A few studies show better results by splitting up workouts. But do whatever fits your lifestyle.
