BMR vs Sedentary

Hello guys

I am about 120 kg and I checked my BMR ...it said "1924" and when I checked "sedentary" it added 400 calories.
The difference in calories is confusing me.
I'm a part-timer, so I don't go out much. Right now, I spend most of my day on my laptop, sleeping, eating, or praying (which involves little movement).
I'm trying to incorporate exercise into my life style. I walk for 15 minutes sometimes.

My questions is should I calculate my calories based on my BMR or sedentary?

BMR is what your body needs just to survive, with no additional movement, like if you were in a coma. Even though it is small, we still burn calories everyday in our basic daily activity. Sitting burns calories, brushing our teeth, walking to the car, etc. That is where the extra 400 calories comes from.

My policy is to always start with the higher option and work my way down if I need to. Why start at the bottom (BMR)?

Base it on sedentary. If you get up and go to the bathroom once during the day ... eat and digest a meal ... actively think (the human brain does consume quite a bit of energy for its size) ... then you exceed your BMR. As 3dogs pointed out ... BMR is base metabolism without any conscious activity.
