Breakfast at a restaurant

I'm going out to breakfast with my family tomorrow and I'm worried that everything on the meny will be really high cal or high fat. What do you eat when you go out to breakfast that keeps you on track?

If you know where you're going to be going for breakfast you could always look it up beforehard if there is a nutritional menu for the restaurants items. If not, most places will have fruit for sure. Wheat toast with butter on the side so you can measure how much you're putting on would be good too. Maybe oatmeal or an egg white omlet? I haven't really done this yet (only been here a few days) but those sound like they could be good options.0

Where are you going? Pull up the menu online and check the nutrition facts, decide ahead of time what you're going to get.0

My go to is an egg white omlette with onions, spinach and feta. No toast, no homefries. I have to ask the server not to bring these items to the table b/c if they arrive, I WILL eat them.0

a fruit bowl is always a good way to go0

Most restuarants serve a healthy omelet using egg beaters or something like that! I would suggest that or just ask for an omellete/scramble eggs with lots of veggies in it! Then in stead of toast or biscuits or hashbrowns get fruit as a side! Restaurants typically have some healthy options they may just not be in the forefront of the menu!0

Went out to IHOP a few weeks ago and they have a low cal meals, and the menu had the calories printed next to all the items! Made things VERY easy Good luck0

I agree with you, I think that breakfast's menus are worst than lunch or dinner menus. So unless the restaurant has a light menu, I order "a la carta."
Scramble eggs or egg whites, dry wheat toast (ask for the butter on the side and just dab a little while the bread is warm), and a fruit cup. I also ask for a glass of low fat milk instead of juice. I get protein, calcium Vit D, and less sugar.
If a family member orders a large plate, you may "take" a spoon full of potatoes, or share pancakes instead of the toast. If possible check to see if the restaurant already has nutriotional values listed in their menus, online or at the table menu.
Good luck and happy eating!0 -
Check the menu if there is one... if not, eggs (scrambled) or Eggbeaters is always a good bet. An omelet with low cal veggies (mushrooms, peppers, onions) is always a good choice too... just go light on the cheese. Get coffee or low fat milk to drink instead of juice and you should be fine! I usually just plan to eat a lighter lunch if I am going out for breakfast.0

Don't let it scare you Anytime I go to a restaurant anymore, I always ask for "to go" containers to be brought with my meal. I then immediately split the meal in half. It's also good to plan ahead as previous posters have suggested. You don't necessarily have to limit yourself to just planning your meal choices though, also plan to exercise more that day so you don't have to be so limited. You could plan on having lower calorie choices on your lunch & dinner.
I love breakfast so when we plan on going out to breakfast, I plan on the rest of my day being lower in calories and I plan on doing double my exercise. I usually will have an egg, a small serving of hashbrowns & a pancake with sugar free syrup. I totally enjoy it and then move on with the rest of my day!
Hope you are able to make it work for you!0 -
The egg beaters is a great choice. I agree with adding salsa...mmmm. Some resteraunts like perkins will give you turkey breast grilled instead of bacon or ham.....wonderful alternative. If you like toast, don't skip it, just get the dry wheat and add a bit of butter or jam.0

Thanks everyone, you gave me a lot of great ideas!0

I try to be healthy when we're out, and I also can't have gluten... so that eliminates some temptations right there!
I usually do scrambled eggs or an omelet with veggies, with a side of fruit... yummy and healthy! :flowerforyou:0
