hello all! I just joined the coast guard and I will not be leaving for Basic training until January. I have heard that there is a vigorous training involved at the basic training camp, which is to be expected. I am a pretty steady swimmer and I can pass the running test, but i have trouble with push ups, which i KNOW will be a problem for me.

Does anyone have any tips to build upper muscle strength? I have been doing burpees and what not, and my arms seem to be getting a big stronger, but I am not sure if i can do 15 pushups in a 1 minute.
Any tips would be greatly appreciated! Thanks!!

If you have stairs, try doing stair pushups: start with the 4th of 5th stair and do 10 pushups. If you can do that, wait 2 minutes and do a second set. If you can do that, wait 2 more minutes and do a 3rd set.

If you can't do 1 set of 10, do as many as you can, wait 2 minutes, do a 2nd set of as many as you can, wait 2 minutes, then do a 3rd set.

When you can do 3 sets of 10, move to the next lower step. When you can do 3 sets of 10 on that, move another step down. Eventually you'll be doing 3 sets of 10 pushups on the ground. At that point, add 1 or 2 pushups per set until you can meet your target in 1 minute.
