When rounding exercise calories down....

How much do you typically decrease them by?

I have read plenty of posts questioning the calories burned by both MFP and the equipment at the gym. As I result, I use a formula to calculate my calories burned (that includes average heart rate and my current weight and age as part of the formula)... I don't have a HRM yet, so I know that there is still room for error.

MFP said that based on my 60 minutes (intervals) on the elliptical that I burned 853. The calculation I used brought me to 550ish...I rounded down to just below 500.

Thoughts? Best to continue with the online formula vs MFP?

I think the general consensus is half.
Which makes it pretty near your calculations anyway.

Whatever you do, just track it closely for a few weeks and compare to your results and how you feel and adjust if necessary.

Note: I could be wrong, but I don't think heart rate monitors are good for interval training.
