Why do the charts on MFP stink so bad??

We are pumping all of this data into MFP but the analysis tools they give us to identify any correlations between, say, protein consumption and body fat percentage are just not there. Is there any other app that MFP integrates with that has better analysis? Can you export all of your data and do it on your own? What is everyone else doing?

I find the reports on the phone app are better than the website. I can look up my macro pie chart and weekly data. Much better for me than the skimpy website reports

I don't think there is any correlation between your protein consumption and BF%.....thus no such reports or charts would really exist...any correlation would be a spurious one.

I think the charts and reports are just fine...I can track whatever I need to and can easily see what my macro %s are. I can make changes as necessary as per my performance...I don't need a chart for that.

I agree that the reports and charts really fall short, especially on the website. I am an analytical personality and I get it that they may work for others. But for me, seeing on a chart that I am sticking to my plan and it correlates with the results I want is very important.
Some simple things like logging the target calories on each day and showing the movement on a history graph or giving options on showing multiple tracking items on one graph need to be done.
I am a new member, tracking for 50 days now and I have lost 31 lbs, so I am happy with the start, but I have a long way to go. I am committed to staying on this coarse and would like to see the site improve to give us better feedback and encouragement.

cwolfman13: I am referring to layering multiple measures on top of each other to find correlations. I am actually not interested in correlations between protein and body fat % at all. The way I eat and exercise is unique to me and I don't expect MFP to know how I would want to look at my data. Just off the top of my head, what I would look at on this particular afternoon would be:

small swings in weight and if they follow an increase in sodium consumption
do I lose weight faster if I exercise every day or not at all (curiously, it seems not at all)
body fat % changes when weight is the same
how has my average daily macro nutrients changed since I stopped eating dairy?

I like numbers, charts, graphs, statistics and I want it all. ALL THE DATA.
  • Wish I could get that nice colored graph showing how much weight I lost to show up on my profile page. All I have is a small block saying 3lbs lost, what a let down. I have saved the changes to show my weight loss on posts but I want it on the profile or seen when I have the Withings app open while walking. MFP says that they can't get that accomplished and not sure if they will ever get that to go. Then send out an app update including MPF own scales that can be uploaded, I know guys/gals this really bummed me out. Thanks for listening.

The best app I have on my phone for that kind of stuff is MS Excel. It does exactly what I want every time (well... I just do my entries manually at the end of the week..)

I use Excel for this kind of stuff. A bit tedious to start with, but I managed to boil down the data which was actually useful for me and just use that now for trend analysis.

I would be lost without some decent analysis with all this lovely data I'm generating on my body.

You should download the file suggested by fivethreeone! It gives you an excel spreadsheet with several very well done charts & graphs. More importantly, It let's you export all of your specific data from MFP for up to the past 365 days. You can then choose what to track, whether you are proficient enough to create your own graphs & stats, or export it to another system.
