So I've only had breakfast today.. And I've already hit my sugar goals.. Should they be this low? I had some cereal with milk, and now I have to avoid sugars for the rest of the day?! This seems off a little, just wondering if anyone has any insight..

My diary is public if anyone needs to take a look.

Good question, I have this same problem. I'm pretty much over my sugar limit after I eat breakfast. Who knew there was that much sugar in milk? But I too am curious on what others have to say about this.

I was wondering this too, according to Wikipedia (first place I checked), sugar intake should be no more than 25% of your total daily calories.

but of course the less the better....

  • I am diabetic. And therefore very concerned about my sugar intake. My dietician informed me not to be concerned with sugar. Instead watch my carbs. Sugar is part of carb count. She said to have 60 carbs per meal and 50 in snacks per day.

the sugar in milk is natural. That counts towards carbs. So does the sugar in fruits and vegetables. I create my own food with these and minus out the sugar so it doesn't show up in the sugar column. I only count added sugar (i.e. some kind of sugar in the ingredients).

I stay away from granola bars, Fiber One Bars, etc. Quaker weight control and lower sugar oatmeal are pretty good. You still get some sweetness but not too much.

You should really only count added sugars (like refined sugar or high fructose corn syrup). If you're consuming natural sugars from fruit or milk you don't really need to worry about them, unless you're eating a ton. Sugars that are found naturally in foods aren't as easy to break down and absorb so they don't cause blood sugar spikes.

Don't eat Food that have added sugar like cereals and milk. Eat oatmeal or oatbran add fruit or honey eat that with eggs. Eat a couple of pieces of fruit. Eat natrual sugar not sugars that have been added to the foods. IF you go over eating fruits and veggies that is ok. Try to stay under 5g per serving on anything else.

As a diabetic, my doctor doesn't want me going over 50 in a day. It's very difficult, but doable. I use unsweetened almond milk in my cereal, have kashi (low sugar, high protein & fiber), sometimes fruit, and do atkins shakes, bars, and think thin bars, too.

Unless the sugars you're eating are the natural kinds from raw/fresh fruit then you shouldn't consume more than your 24g in a day. Fruit sugars are mostly "free", just don't overdue it. But you definitely had way too much sugar for breakfast. The sugar in milk might be natural, but it's not overly healthy since a lot of people have lactose intollerances. You cereal choice was a very refined choice, try something more natural, like Kashi or organic granolla.

I would say watch your carbs closer than sugars.... sugars piss me off on here! I watch closely on sugars and I still go over too... same as sodium :(

This is a weakness I've noticed on MyFitnessPal. The nutritional info tracking lumps all kinds of sugars into one category. There's no way to distinguish between the healthier sugars of Fruits and the unhealthy corn syrups, white sugar, etc.

I often find myself at or near a sugar limit for the day (on MFP) by eating 1/8 cup of raisins as part of my trail mix. Yes, they have sugar, but it's not a refined sugar.

My goal? Eat whatever the heck I want, but keep the processed stuff to a minimum. And don't bother paying attention to the sugar count on MFP. Your particular needs may vary, if there is a medical need for limiting all kinds of -ose or -ase compounds (lactose, fructose, sucrose, lactase, etc.)
  • Thanks for letting me know. I don't often drink milk and am not a big fan of cereal, so maybe today was a weird day, but I don't usually look at my sugars. I was shocked to find out they were already used up!! I don't naturally gravitate towards sweets, so maybe I don't usually have to worry..

As in everything you have to find out what works for you and what doesnt' there is no cut and dry, "no this won't affect you or this will affect you."

If it is not affecting your weight loss, don't worry about natural sugars in fruit. But if you are losing weight very very slow or have belly fat that won't go down then you might want to look at ALL sugars you take in.

I thought sugars in fruit can't be harmful so I ate alot of fruit (bananas, apples & plums)as part of my eating regimen.

I was losing 1 lb a month(6months) then I started to watch sugars it was brought to my attention because I was concerned about the slow weight loss, had blood work done and everything. My sugars were about 60-80 each day. 75% of my sugars came from fruit.

So I cut back on the fruit to keep my sugars under 15 limit. This is the only change I made , still ate the same I was for the past 6 months prior. I lost 6lbs in 8 weeks. A big difference from 1 lb a month! Also it changed my body shape, I had no change the 6 months prior, I posted it:

    http://www.myfitnesspal.com/topics/show/140762-belly-fat-progress-pics-9-20-12-10

Although I know I can have more after I reach my goal and start adding in more fruit. They issue was not making me gain weight just slowing down the process of loosing weight.
  • Yeah I don’t know what to do with my sugar intake!! I’m always over but I don’t know what to cut out of my diet… I don’t eat or (I try not to) anything with added sugar… 90% of my sugar comes from fruits so do I stop eating fruit?
I don’t eat cereal, I don’t drink milk (I use soy milk)… I use truvia & sugar-free creamer for my coffee!! The only other thing I eat that I guess I get sugar from is my yogurt (I eat the Greek kind) a lot let sugar in it… I know where some sugar in my bread I eat but again I don’t eat more than 2 slices in one day…. Grrrrrrrrr
Just not sure what to do about this…
  • skim milk has lactose - that is sugar!
  • If you are trying to lose the last few pounds than any sugar counts - including fruit and dairy however if you have a lot to go or are maintaining then I agree healthy/natrual sugars in moderation are okay.

Skim milk does have sugar! 12g per 8oz
  • Silk Organic Unsweetened has 1 gram of sugar per 8 oz. I started using it today. Not too bad.

  • Almond and Coconut milk also low in sugar 1 g I think - love them in cereal (kasha) or oatmeal
