Gaining weight after physically intense week?

This week, I added a couple of exercises to my four-day-a-week workout routine and increased the intensity level. Also, on Monday, I went on a five-mile hike which I am still recovering from (LOL) because there were a lot of hills that had to be climbed. I did comp for the hike, but otherwise I have been within my weekly calorie intake. Physically, my arms are getting toned.
Here are my questions:
1. Is unusual hunger a sign that I've been working extra hard?
2. How do I know if the weight that I gained is water retention from my modified workout and Monday's hike?

You've been working with more intensity, your body want's more food to fuel itself! Instead of relying on your scale, try to go off of measurements... the retained water weight should decrease eventually.0
