Beef vs. Venison

I just have to post this. My man is a hunter and I was griping at him last night because of all the venison we have in our freezer and I'm trying to eat healthier. I worry about too much red meat.

Vension is healthier than chicken and beef and pork! (The only higher number is cholesterol because it is such a lean meat).

I love love love venison, and I wish my guy was a hunter (I couldn't do it) so that we could eat it on a regular basis! It's super expensive to buy

I am a firm believer that almost anything in moderation will not hurt you, especially red meat.0

I'm slowly getting there. I'm just trying to get healthy but have managed to turn it into a calorie restrictive diet. I'm slowly getting back out of the that mode. I got obsessed with calorie counting. I'm trying to move it over to just counting fat and sugar grams.0 -
venison is a great lean meat alternative... so is ostrich

never tried ostrich but would be willing to. I've been trying a lot of new foods these days. I like the fact that I don't have to worry about deer being injected with steroids, hormones, antibiotics and Heaven know what else.0 -
Venison is so good for you! Red meat has a lot of iron too. Plus wouldn't you rather eat an animal from the wild than from a feedlot or a squished chicken cage?!
If you are in certain areas of the US though, you have to make sure you get your venison tested for Chronic Wasting Disease (it's like mad cow). It's mostly only in Colorado, but I believe it's been found a few other places.
Someday I'd love to get my hunting liscence and get some of my own venison!! Fortunately my boss gave me some!! I also got some antelope, which is really good. Love ostrich too!! yumm...0 -
Venison like kangaroo is very good for you as there is very little if any fat in the meat. I know to make venison dogs you have to put a little pork fat in them otherwise they will just burn....its supe good for you! The only thing is if you dont cook it right, venison and kangaroo becaome very tough!0

Venison is the best but it has to be served rare... or cooked all day.0

When we grind it we have to add some pork to it. The burger texture ends up a little off if we don't. I try and stick with the roast and tenderloins. But I can't pass up his venison chili!
I started out eating it well done (I had to get past the fact I was eating deer - it's all in the mind). Now I like mine medium (I do my beef medium too. Sometimes a little less).0 -

Venison is grade A protein. There is nothing unhealthy about fresh venison.0 -
If you had told me when I was young that I would eat venison I would have given you a very loud 'EWWWW"
But now that my hubby has gotten a couple of deer, a small buck this year and a 10 pointer two years ago, we have had a steady stream of it in our freezer for the last two years. If you know anything about weight watchers, on the old program (not the new PointsPlus) the steaks came out to a point per ounce and that is an awesome 'bargain'. We seem to use it most ground and use it in meat sauce for our spaghetti and in our chili. It's really good. (you only have to watch out for the bucks when they are in heat.....tends to have a more 'gamey' taste. But a soak overnight in milk will take that right out!!!)0 -
I LOVE venison & bison meat!!! To me they both taste better & I now they are both leaner than other red meat… As someone already said everything in moderation0

one of the bars by my office used to make the best handmade bison burgers, but then they replaced them with pre-made pattys so I stopped going. Anyway, a bison burger is not that good for you when you have an order of fries and a guinness with it!0 -
my boyfriend is a hunter as well, and we have a crap ton of venison in our freezer too. thank you for the information!0

I've pretty much lived an entire life of eating deer instead of beef. Especially once I became of age to hunt. Never an empty freezer in my household.0
