Anyone taking Glucosamine?

Hi!!! Well, I was told last week that I have arthritis in my knees, especially the right one. They do hurt sometimes and they make this weird grinding noise when I do squats, lunges and I go down the stairs. The doctor recommended taking glucosamine. She also gave me a prescription for Naproxen for pain, if needed. Anyone taking glucosamine? Anyone out there with arthritic knees? Are there any other exercises I can do to strengthen and tone my legs besides squats and lunges? Thanks!!!

I've had problems with my left knee since I tore my ACL a few years ago-my doctor told me to take glucosamine, and maybe it was just me, but I didn't find that it made all that much of a difference- I just grin and bear it, and take OTC painkillers when it starts acting up0

I don't take it - but my understanding is that it isn't as effective by itself. If you use the blend with Condroitin (sp?) I understand it is more effective. A long time ago I read something about gelatin for arthritis. I know of several people who benefit from having a packet of gelatin or two a day - get the regular plain Knox gelatin - mixed with a glass of OJ or yogurt or something and drink or eat - quickly! Anyhow - that's all I know! Good luck hope something helps :flowerforyou:0

Not only do we take Glucosamine every morning but we also add it to our Goldens morning food.
he is 13 and with hip displasia still going strong.
Vit C, Fish Oil and Glucos everymorning seems to work wonders for everyone in the house.
These are the staples... I also take Vit B and Zinc amond others as well.
Glucosamine works for us.

And you do not NEED to do squats if your knees are hurting.
Try useing bands. That might be easier on your knees. Good luck and keep us posted.

My doctor told me that my knees look like they belong to a much older person, hehe.
I was taking glucosamine for some time but with no significant effect. You are supposed to take it for at least 2 months to see any effects. I've been told by two different doctors that it is not sure if glucosamie will work - it may, it may not have effects on me. It didn't You can't really rebuilt your joints :ohwell: Glucosamine has also a mild pain killing effect which may make your knees hurt less.
My knees were really bad when I was working full time as a waitress (walking and standing all the time), now, after few months it's much better. I jog sometimes but I make sure that I do different kind of activities (bike, elliptical, swimming) to avoid doing the same movements. I discovered squats are ok, but not full squats, just half. You have to be careful with lunges - control the movement and make sure your knee is not further than above your foot. Don't do any exercise that make you feel pain in your knees.
Building strong muscles around your knee is extremely important to stabilize it so do weights. Good exercise is to lift your legs (one at a time or both) when your are sitting on a chair or there is a machine for that in every gym.0 -
I have had tendonitis in both hips and take Osteo Bi-Flex Triple Strength when it flares up. It has glucosamine combined with chondroitin and it seems to work well for me. My boyfriend was also recommended to take it for his shoulder that bothers him from a surgery. Not the cheapest stuff, but we can usually find it on 2 for 1 sales and stock up.
If you haven't already, I would say go to a physical therapist. They can give you all sorts of exercises to strengthen your knees.0 -

I have very bad arthritis in both knees. I also take the Osteo Bi-Flex Triple Strength. And I can tell the difference in when I take it or when I don't. It won't take months to get built up to where you will see the difference. I have also tried other off brands... I just make sure it has the same ingredients.0 -
It seems that at first it took about a week taking 3 tabs a day to really begin to work. I can tell you that it is worth every penny to prevent injury and to allow you the best quality of life possible. You take your car in for regular oil changes and keep it maintained...your body is SO much more important.
I do yoga, walk, and strength train...without the glucosamine with MSM squatting and bending hurts my left knee and puts my focus on pain and not on positive results.
