Heart Rate Monitor Question

I have a Polar FT4. Biking and running have been my main exercise this summer and I've noticed that on occasion I will get a different calorie burned number for the same route I always take. For example, I'll ride the same bike route and the FT4 will say that I burned around 500 calories. Every once in awhile I'll ride the exact same route and the calories burned are around 300. It's the same deal with running. I've had My Polar FT4 for only 8 months and it looks like it's working fine. Has any one else encountered this type of discrepancy?

Is it taking you exactly the same amount of time to go those routes, and are you going in exactly the same route, at exactly the same pace?

For example, if you go a bit slower for a few minutes, and then work harder for a few minutes to catch up, then you might burn more calories than if you go a steady pace. Or if you are going up a different side of the street or path than usual, and that side has a little more incline than the other side where you usually run or ride...that will cause you to work harder for a moment.
