Some background so you know where the thoughts are originating: I am 48, still have my period but do not have cramps anymore. I had debilitating cramps for about three years until my college roommate told me I needed to get on the pill. I did and the cramps went away.

I used to think that staying in bed curled up in a ball was the only way to survive. Then one day, I couldn't do that and had to get up and get moving and it helped. Not as much as the pill but it helped more than laying in bed or sitting in a chair.

My advice: Eat some chocolate (or whatever you are craving within reason) and go for walk. In my opinion, when it is that time, our body is doing so much extra work and yours is telling you it needs more food. You can eat 200-300 extra (but healthy) calories without the world coming to an end. Drink some water. Take care of yourself. Go get a pedicure. MINIMUM: take a shower, get dressed, and try to look like you feel better.

Have you seen a doc to rule out PCOS?

PCOS, Endometriosis, you name it, sooo many things that can cause a lot of pain. You won't lose all of your work if you take a day or two off for pain either.

I've been in the "so much pain I can barely move" boat; sometimes its so bad, my cramps will wake me up!
I honestly force myself to work out. It's the absolute worst sometimes in the beginning, but once I start moving, I tend to feel so much better. Also taking a hot bath, or using a hot water bottle on your stomach can help to ease the pain as well.

I did discuss the painful cramping with my doctor as well, and I've found that Depo really helped me, since it just gets rid of the darn thing, and I have one cycle every 2-3 months, instead of once a month. :) I'd talk to your doctor to rule out any health problems, and possibly consider a birth control method to control your symptoms!

Grab some good dark chocolate and some raw almonds to munch on. If you crave salty or salty sweet, grab some peanut butter and dip sliced apples in it. I even eat potato chips - just weigh out a portion, put the bag away and enjoy them. Plenty of water, too.

Drop some Advil and go for a walk, or even power through your regular workout. I do my regular workouts no matter what, and over time my cramping and pain has lessened, and I take far less pain killers than I used to when I stayed curled up in a chair.

If you really can't get through a workout, don't fret - as others have said, taking a few days off does not ruin any of your work.

I know walking is the last thing you want to do, but it always helps me once I get started. Seriously. And eat if you're hungry, just make smart choices and don't go overboard. Your metabolism rises a bit during your cycle, which is why you're hungrier, so you will be okay. And stay hydrated,

I agree. If I feel like eating a little more during I do. I don't gain weight in a few days from eating a little extra.

Gosh I thought your post was going to be much worse...LOL. I get cravings before my ladies' time too...recognizing it helps, and I try to snack on things that will satisfy them but not add too many calories. One of my favorites is roasted brussel sprouts- you're probably laughing but when you roast them in a little olive oil, garlic and salt they are as good as potato chips!

And agree on the pill idea....it helps with cramps a lot. If you don't want to go on birth control, then Motrin is still the best thing around.

i just know day 2 is going to be a rest day. The cramps hit my lower back and can about bring me to my knees, and it's an extremely heavy day.

I don't know if others are like me, but each day is a different. Like one day I'm not hungry, one day I'm tired, one day I'm starving, and one day I think I'm nesting and clean clean clean...lol.

I drink lots of water, and know to give into my cravings but in moderation.

If you don't exercise just make sure you concentrate on calorie deficit as best you can.

It's so funny you mentioned cleaning...I always know my period is coming because the house will seem filthy to me and I'll spend an entire day cleaning it!

aww I feel your pain  the only thing that worked for me, was a couple of feminax (pain killers specifically for period pain) and a hot water bottle, I hope you get some relief soon xx

Since having my daughter my periods have become unbearable without medication. The pain can be so blinding, I can't think, have a conversation or drive. I've seen a specialist. I take extra strength advil, and work out like a mad women. I never want to go to the gym, and it takes me an extra 10 or so minutes getting ready for the workout and post workout just because I'm super cautious about spillage and all that jazz but I find that the endorphins from my workout are the only thing that make we actually feel good. It doesn't last the entire day, maybe just a few hours but it really helps. My pain starts 1-2 days before aunt flow drops in and then lasts for about 2 days.

I don't weigh myself for the week before and after my cycle - with the bloating and water retention it's just not a good idea for me. My weight will fluctuate 4-6 lbs.
