Free weight ramp up advice

I currently use 10 lb. free weights, but would like to ramp it up. How much weight should I put on at time and in what increments, how many reps, and how long before moving the weights up to the next level. I just want to be fit and toned, not super-duper muscle-y.

It depends on the exercises, but usually increase in the smallest possible amount, like 2.5 or 5 lbs.
There are many opinions about reps, but usually you can't go wrong aiming to get fatigued by around 8 to 12 reps. If you can do more than 14 reps, you probably should increase the weight. But good form always takes priority.
