Kids eating...

Just curious. I don't allow my younger siblings (age 8-3) to eat high sugars or high carbs and many people look at me crazy or make snide remarks. Yes, kids should be kids and they aren't on a set diet, but if there's an option between bagged chips or fruit - they get the fruit and not the chips. I also don't give them sugar-y drinks.:noway: Only milk and water. Does anybody else have problems like this with other people making snide comments on what they're allowed to eat and drink? BTW, everybody in my family implements these rules. We also make them eat their proteins which gets comments too... weird. :ohwell:

We pretty much just watch out for sugars with my kids. They have set rules at school about sugar content and junk food. Chips, cookies, juice boxes, soda, flavored yogurt ... that kind of stuff is all a no-no. We generally try and keep the same rules at home because it's just easier that way. Chips are usually reserved for BBQs when we have guests, and soda is almost always cane sugar based. As for carbs ... meh, they eat pasta and bread lots. My kids are both very healthy and have normal body weights. My eldest is actually on the low end for her age and height. If they will eat a salad prior to having mac and cheese I'm not going to argue. I'm also the parent, so anyone who has any problems with how I feed my children can suck it, because it's not unhealthy.0

My sis-in-law goes to kidney dialysis three times a week due to her diabetes.
She raised her daughter on sugar and carbs. Now the two year old granddaughter is eating mostly sugar and carbs.
It is heart breaking.0 -
I do allow my children some sugary treats, it's just not all the time.
I make sure they have a varied diet and include lots of fruit and veggies (am yet to get them to eat much salad stuff though!) and let them have the odd treat. They get £1 to spend at the shop every Friday and they generally buy a bar of chocolate each.
But I eat chocolate too so who I am to complain too much.
They are active and go swimming and play rugby. I think treats in moderation are fine.0 -
ive had the comments of why dont i feed my daughter childrens food
i asked whats childrens food? "oh you know chicken nuggets, fish fingers, chips etc" and "you should stop feeding her spicy food, kids tummys arnt designed for that " yea you see kids in india eating chicken nuggets allllllll the time insted of currys
my daughter eats whatever i make. i dont add salt so theres no issues with it.
she does have snacks extra to those i would have as she has medical issues and needs the extra calories0 -
My 6 year old is allowed everything in moderation. She loves her vegetables, doesn't like fizzy drinks or sweets but she does like crisps and chocolates. If she eats all her dinner then she can have a couple of biscuits (she loves Hob Nobs) after. She is tall and slim for her age and very healthy. She eats just about anything, from cottage pie to curry, beef steak to teryaki tuna steak, green beans to broccoli etc... I don't believe in restricting children's diets of any particular food group as long as it it mostly healthy and they know what food is good for them.
I had a friend whose child wasn't allowed anything "bad" for them (even to the stage where the mother took homemade special food for the child when they went to parties, and no, there were no allergies to consider!) and consequently when they got to an age where they could access "bad" food, at friends' houses or could get to a shop on their own, well, you can imagine the carnage. That young adult is now an overweight mess with no idea of moderation as "bad" food is "good"... sad but true.0
