Just Breathe

What do Faith Hill, Blu Cantrell and all of the artists here know: http://www.thecouchsessions.com/2009/08/songs-with-the-same-title-breathe/ ?

Something that I only recently just got into my thick head: you have to breathe.

As I dipped into Yoga and got serious about my fitness this year, I've noticed that I am not breathing correctly. Over the years as I got rounder and rounder, I realized that I'd developed a method of breathing that wouldn't cause my already large midsection to distend anymore. This of course lead to quick shallow breathing over time that severely limited my ability to perform in any physical activity.

As I've begun following Yoga videos and began to learn the breath of fire or have my EA Sports and C25K trainers reminding me to breathe, I realize what a difference it makes. Not only does proper breathing technique (out on the exertion) help me to perform more exercises, but it also helps me to stabilize my heart rate and work out longer with less soreness at the end.

Being in a Biomedical Science program and having always advised others to mind their breathing, one would think this is a no-brainer but I'd actually been holding my breath much more frequently than I thought. It's still taking me a while to unlearn my bad habits but breathing is helping me to run harder and faster, work out more intensely and more frequently.

So whatever you're doing, remember to breathe.

I know what you mean! I'd end up with a massive headache by the time I finished my workout. My hubby finally clued me in one time when we were working out together a few years ago. It turns out I hold my breath as much as half of my workout! Since we've worked at it (him reminding me to breathe!) the headaches have disappeared.
  • That's one thing that I learned doing yoga a few years ago. I loved learning that.

jeesa, that's a problem I've had too. From doing a bodyweight workout I did in the past I'd end up with a blinding headache. I thought I was having an aneurysm or something. I also had it really really really really bad one time in the past where I was jumping rope and just stopped dead afterwards with no cooldown. Never ever ever again.

when I started doing yoga I actually found out I was breathing incorrectly. I mean really, I was breathing wrong. It made me wonder wtf else I was doing wrong and being clueless over...lol it was a huge epiphany actually

@BoresEasily EA Sports Active 2 workout #2 of the day...shortly after eating too much Thai food. Good work out but terrible scheduling.
  • What does EA Sports active involve?

Thanks alot to many MFP'ers posts where I learned that breathing is important while working out.

Now, I do not care if i am breathing heavily & the person next to me at the gym can hear.

I am getting my oxygen flow to the brain = No post workout headache that's all that matters right!
