BC and weight gain?

When I first looked into birth control, my doctor told me there was almost no evidence that bc caused weight gain, although she did see a high proportion of women who went on hormonal injections gain significant weight.

A month ago I started on the nuvaring, which is the first hormonal therapy I've ever gone on. I've been running 3-10 miles a day, 5 days a week, plus yoga, biking, strength training, and martial arts practice. My rest days generally involve a hike or leisurely bike ride.
I've been more active in the last month than I have in a long while, I eat in a moderate deficit (monitored with another app because mfp doesn't work well on my phone). Yet I still gained 5 pounds and my face looks puffier than it did before.

So, the only other thing I can think of that could contribute to 5lbs weight gain is the birth control. Obviously I will also look into more closely monitoring my calories to compensate, but I was wondering if anyone else had experienced weight issues when going on birth control, and if any of you fine ladies (or men with lady friends) have advice on dealing with it.

Many thanks and cheers.

Everyone is different. I've heard that the only BC that has the ability to cause weight gain is the Depo shot, because it's progestin (super huge spelling error) based which can cause weight gain.

When I first started BC (almost 9 years ago) I felt a week or so of increased appetite, but if I hadn't felt the need to eat more, then I wouldn't have gained. And honestly I don't think I did. Whenever you add new hormones in your body is going to react. It's not the BC doing it.

No weight gain--other than what occurred from not closely monitoring my eating (even while marathon training) took a little while to admit that yes, it was my eating.
