squat rack etiquette question

I've started going to the gym at my university at lunch, which has only one squat rack/power cage (the gym I used to go to had 5). I know this is a stupid question, but at my old quiet gym I never had to worry about waiting to use the squat rack, because there was hardly ever anyone else using it.

So - what is the proper etiquette for getting in line to use this? Assuming you've finished warming up, do you just awkwardly loiter around until the person using it is done? How do you know who else, of the other people loitering around, was waiting before you? How long do you wait until you give up and try again another day?

Ask him to notify you when he is done, then leave the area. He will inform you if somebody else already called it.

LOLZ. No, just go to the smith machine instead.
Just tell him you'd like to do a few curls and ask if you can work in. That's what I do at least.

Good call. Just ask to borrow some clips first just in case.

don't forget the back pad and spotter.

OP- just ask between HIS/HER sets how many sets they have left- and if they offer to let you work in- great- or not- just ask to use it after- and drop your bag and go be busy somewhere else. don't loiter right next to the rack.

This. I once was in the power cage, with a few more sets to go. A couple guys asked, so I told them. They decided to wait and went and did some pull-ups (I think). As I was unracking after my last set, another person came up and asked if I was done. I told him yes, but those other guys were looking to get in. My point is: let the person(s) using it know you want/need it when they're done. That way, they can let you know before someone else jumps in.

^^^ I do this. I will normally try to find a machine nearby to wait near or maybe do a few warm up sets. If the person in the rack is going to be there for awhile, I will adjust my workout and come back later.

my gym is small enough- I usually know who is in the rack so I don't mind loitering/stretching/jump roping- we do have a small space off to the side perfect for that so it's like loitering- with out the creep factor.
But yeah- pretty much- if they just got started- I find a way to work in- find another rack closer to being done- or if I know EVERYONE on the racks- I just make myself loud and annoying till they leave ;)
