NSV: What did you give up?

So I have been getting almost daily comments about my weight loss of late, but my favorite:

Coworker said I looked great and what have I been doing. I gave my usual answer - counting calories and exercise. Next question - What don't you eat anymore? Bread? Sugar? My answer - Nothing! I still eat everything I want, just less of it.

Queue skeptical look. :ohwell:

Note - This was from someone who has lost and gained weight several times in the 15 years I have worked with her.

That is always cool yet infuriating. I get it a lot too. Even some people close to me (friends I've had for decades) just *ASSUME* I no longer eat sugar, bread, etc...or that I am eating Paleo, low carb, totally gluten-free.

I just laugh...I don't know what's up with that. I guess there is so much hype lately surrounding various diets and eating plans to lose weight, that when they know someone who has lost a significant amount of weight in the past several years they assume it's one of those that was used.

Do you find that people act all disappointed and sometimes offended by the REAL answer? I do! LOL

    Congats though :-)

I agree, they sure do act offended. Everyone wants the miracle cure. Congrats on the NSV - those are the best!

Definitely disappointed that there isn't some miracle fix!

The only thing I completely gave up was diet pop (I gave up the regular stuff a few years ago). Everything else I still indulge in, just in moderation.

I think that it IS a miracle cure you don't have to give up any of your favorite foods to lose weight.
If I never got to have bread, chocolate, wine, again for the rest of my life... I'd rather be fat! HAHA

Anyway, I gave up emotional eating.
    I'm an emotional shopper now!
My wardrobe is pretty great :P

People do this to me too. Often. It's really frustrating.

Them: "How are you doing it?"
Me: "Healthier foods, proper portion sizes, still allow myself to have things I want - just less, calorie counting, exercise 5 days a week"
Them: :noway: "Do you think *insert fad diet here* will work for me?"
    Me: :grumble: "Sure, why not?"

If you ask me how I've lost 85 lbs, but then don't want to take my advice or believe me or whatever the issue is at that point..I really don't give a damn what you do. Have at it. I'm pretty much out of the conversation at that point. There's no magical diet, pill, or fix. You have to put in the work. A lot of work.. and often times, it feels like a full time job, honestly. That's not something you can explain to someone that isn't ready to change their lifestyle, unfortunately.

How funny, my boss asked me the same things a couple of weeks ago. He just joined a weightloss program for the second time.
I did give up diet pop as well. That's it, that's all!

I think it's because a lot of people are STILL hoping there is some magic potion or pill or whatever that will make them lose weight, too. They generally don't like to hear that it takes eating better, exercising more, etc. It amazes me that so many people still hold out hope for a magic cure and don't want to put forth any effort.

In this type of situation, when you tell them the truth and they are skeptical, that's when you tell them, well, there really IS a secret, but you'll have to pay me a very large amount of money to tell you!
