If anyone is thinking about running and unsure...DO IT!
I've always wanted to run and that was my motivation to getting started. I was already at my goal weight so I can't share any fantastic loss in that department. But today I was curious and decided to redo my measurements. I couldn't believe it!
In one month's time, I've lost three inches off my hips!! I seriously cannot believe it! I wasn't trying to loose any inches. I was happy where I was! But this was the main cardio I was doing. My previous measurements were 34-26-35. Now I'm 34-26-32. Not much different in the two other departments but could not believe the hips!
So get up on that treadmill and run like the wind!!!

Whenever I'm running it has always made me feel the skinniest. I love running outside so this winter has been hard (ie nil) for me but I'm getting on it! That's so great about your accomplishment! That is mostly where I want to lose my fat so definitely an encouragement.0

Awesome! I have tried it before - but i think I was still too fat. I got bad shin splints. I'm good for trying it again now, though. What about your shoes? What brand do you like? I have some semi-old New Balance Cross Trainers. Do you think they are okay?0

New Balance are my second favorite shoes to my Saucony. I have Omni 8's that I bought online after being fitted at a running store. I really suggest being fitted at an actual store if you've had issues in the past. I know that I have bad knees and that whenever I had tried "jogging" in the past it would end in pain and defeat. When I went to "Running Central" they had me stand on a mat that showed where I put the most pressure, someone watched me walk to see if I pronated (walked inwards) and then watched me run. It was an amazing experience. I still supported the store by purchasing a bra and socks. I just couldn't afford the same pair of shoes for $130 dollars. I found them online for $69. If anyone wants help finding a certain pair, just ask me. I searched and searched for my pair for the best deal, free shipping even! Sometimes if you order off of your phone there is an even better deal!)

I completely agree! I have been doing the Couch to 5k program and I LOVE IT! It just totally helps you advance your running skills, and honestly my running has improved unbelievably. I have definitely been noticing that it has helped me loose more around my hips!
To melanie92 - when I first started running I got shin splints too (and I am very heavy). I just continued to walk on the days I wasn't doing C25K and gave myself shin massages and did some proper stretching before and after the runs. The shin splints gradually went away, and now I don't get them at all - I still weigh 205 pounds now. I think it is just something that you have to build yourself up to. You may want to look into getting some proper running shoes if you are serious about doing this, it can really make a huge difference0 -
That's great, Tara! I always feel my "skinniest" when I run, as well! My waist and belly have trimmed down from running but haven't seen significant difference in my hips for quite some time but I hope to track it this time and see what happens!!0

Yup, I know what you mean. I've been running for years and my hips and legs are the slimmest part of my body. I've often wondered how effective running would be in slimming down the hip area of pear-shaped women?0

I've wondered the same thing! I've always been VERY hour glass shaped. I really want to loose more off my stomach but I'm not sure how much more there is to go, other then to get more toned. Then again, I didn't have a clue I had three inches to loose off my hips. I wouldn't have believed it except that I actually wrote down my inches and logged them on here right at Thanksgiving!0 -

If you had shin splits, i would consider a different shoe for sure. Get fitted at a running specific type store in your area. You will find that runners are a very supportive group and want your running experiance to be a positive one. And my wife has dropped a lot of size off of her hips/stomach from running she used to wear a 16/14, now she's wearing 10's that she bought 2 months ago and they are falling off of her. She looks amazing!(Hot!)0 -
Awesome about your measurements!!! My hips could definitely use some inches lost!!!
Going out for a run in the morning - low altitude should be enjoyable. Practically sea level here compared with the mile high that I'm used to.
I thought when you said running and your hips, you weren't talking about the benefits. I've had major issues with my IT band inflaming. It hurts!! It usually wont start getting sore until after running 4-5 miles though, and will be painful at 5 or 6. Anyone else have this problem? Stretches dont seem to help. but maybe I just haven't been consistent enough.0 -

My biggest helps have been doing yoga before hand and this may sound weird but Zumba! My most successful runs have been after some Zumba. At least 20 minutes. I guess it just loosens me up!
I should have thought about that title, ah well. I was excited and put it under success for happy hips! LOL!0 -
I used to get really awful shin splints, until I read the best tip ever: do not tighten your shoe laces. I used to make them really tight and every time, five minutes into my walk or run, it just hurt so much. Nowadays never. Try to just tie them as loose as you can, you can always modify it if needed.0

Hm, I'd like to run, but I'm pretty sure I've got what they call "juvenile rheumatoid arthritis" in my hip. I don't really know, it's undiagnosed, but even walking for a bit makes my hip feel as though someone has taken a red hot poker and slid it into my hip socket. Ow
For quite a while I tried, though; my first time out I ran a nine minute mile, but days after it started hurting and I couldn't run anymore.
<< Needs to see a doctor.
Anyway, I had thought that this thread would be something I could relate to more, heh.0 -
I def need to try running...I can do the elliptical for an hour, burn 750+ calories, but I can't run for shhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh. I think its because my legs feel so much heavier when I jog/run versus when I am on the elliptical...must just be a mental thing.0

I hate you, Tara! lol I have been running for almost 3 months and no loss in my hips. Errgg! LOL Good job!0

Glad to hear the stories I have tried to job and just never kept up with it but I definately would love to see a slight difference in my hip and stomache area. I do remember a few years back when I was younger I worked myself up to run 2 miles and I did see a difference in my thigh and hip area it was a lil more toned. I am definately going to try to get bk in it? But is there much of a difference if it's on a treadmill or concrete? I love doing the elliptical at the gym but I have never really gotten on the treadmill.......0

How far and often do you run??0 -
It really does do something for your hips. I was working out really hard for a long time, and then I started c25k and the next day, my hips were so sore that I was limping around the house! I am on week 5 and have lost an inch in my hips and the biggest part of my stomach.0

I run on the treadmill at my gym and at home. Come spring (warmer weather, lol) I will move my running outside.
As far as how far or how often, I'm very addicted to running. I probably run 5-6 days a week. But every day its different. One day I run as far as I can at a very steady speed. Not as fast, just steady. My goal this month was to be able to run 30 minutes straight. I wasn't concerned about how much ground I was covering, just that I was continuing to move my legs and body for that amount of time.
The next day is intervals, or HIIT. Get on the treadmill, start at 4.0 to warm up, jump to 6.0, back to 4.0, up to 7.5, down to 4.0, up to 8.5, down to 4.0, then 7.5, 4.0, 6.0, 4.0, and then hold steady at 5 for a jog. I hold at each number for 3 minutes.
Then at least one day I see how fast I can run a mile. I run it as fast as I can, and then just go for a relaxing run afterwards!)

I do like running, it seems to be the most effective exercise for me... but I've been having some terrible pains in my heels lately!!! I think I'm battling some plantar fasciitis and/or heel spurs. I am trying to wear my super supportive running shoes all the time to help out.0

My dad used these rubbery heel cups. I think they may have been prescribed from his dr but I know it really helped him with heel pain.0 -
I just started jogging and I'm really enjoying it. I'm trying to do 6 days a week so I can improve how far I can run. RIght now I can only do 1 1/2 miles before I need to walk a short distance, then I'm back to jogging again, then walking. This is my 2nd full week since I started and I've already improved from only 3/4 mile to the 1 1/2 miles w/o stopping. I need to get some good running shoes after the holidays though since mine are about a year old.0

The lady who analyzed me and my running told me I leaned in quite a bit which can cause all sorts of issues. The Omni 8's are a highly supportive shoe. I haven't had one issue with them. Do your shoes help you out?0
