Max Strength - http://max-strength.co.uk
or
Smart Performance - http://smartperformancecf.com/ (crossfit gym)

Max Strength as it says in the title is all about strength training, strongman, powerlifting, boot camps, etc

Go visit them both and see which one you feel more at home at. Then pick that one.

Depends on what you are into / what you are looking for.
Both seem to be very new age / minimal / box kinda place - if you into beginner to intermediate strength / power lifting, cross fit or fast moving classes (circuit, boot camp etc...) then visit both and see which one strikes the best deal and is more functional for you.

To answer your question - I wouldn’t join any of the 2 - not into classes, definitely not into cross fit and the overall type of gym.

I'm a member of a gym but I rarely go. I get bored with just cardio and the free weights are crap. I'm thinking Max Strength is more my thing, focusing on strength and in groups etc.

I will look at giving them both a go and see which I like best.

sign up for a month in one and another month in the other one and take it from there.
Bit of a waste to sign up and pay for a membership to then not using it.

Ask if either/both places allow one-day passes. There's a gym near my home that I can use for £4.50 if I'm not able to get to my regular gym in the city.

If they don't allow one-day passes, they may be a cross fit sort of box gym that has a rigid program. If that suits you, try the shortest commitment and see how it goes.

Years ago I went to a very posh gym in Philadelphia. It was right next to my office and had all sorts of fancy extras like marble showers, big personal lockers, free laundry service, fruit bowels, luxury toiletries.... there was another gym (Bally's or something like it) a block further away that was literally one fifth the cost but it had no frills. Not even towels. People asked me why I went to the expensive place and I said, "Because the best value for money is the gym you'll actually use."
