Weight Loss Stupid Tax?

So before you found MFP and learned the right way of going about weight loss, what were some of the incorrect/uninformed/just plan stupid things that you did or believed?

For me, I believed that if you worked out (and did nothing else) you would lose weight. This belief led me to join one of those 5 day/week started at oh-dark-30 Fitness Boot Camp type programs. I went through THREE of these (at $200 a pop) and though the workouts were good and I did get stronger, I never lost weight. I asked the trainer repeatedly why I wasn't losing weight and not once was it suggested that I monitor intake, track calories, give it time, water retention, etc.

ETA the boot camp promised weight loss in 4 weeks.

So, that was my very expensive weight loss stupid tax. What's yours?

I listened to my dumb doctors. I kept being told to eat no more than 1500 cals, I'd eat 1200-1500 and I'd work out 1-2 hrs/day. Then there's the whole carbs thing. I'm paleoish now, but my doctors kept pushing me to eat more rice, bread, potatoes. It wasn't until I eliminated most starches and sugars that I started to see a change. My obsession with the number on the scale! It was always about the number, I didn't bother with measurements, BMI, BF%. I just set that scale number as my goal, now I don't even weigh myself. Last but not least...eating disorders. Anorexia, bullemia, laxing, diuretics, did it all. I don't think the urges ever go away, you just learn to ignore them because you know they do no good. Basically, science.

hiring a personal trainer through the gym I signed up for just a little more than 2 years ago... 10 sessions for my wife and I... and 3 for my daughter... NOT sure what I paid... I generally just have the wife pay for the "stuff' that is important to her... so for 10 sessions.. a "personal trainer" lead me around the gym... and said do this... NO education... no engagement... also the gym membership its self... partially.. I really began enjoying my workouts... mostly cardio... until I signed onto MFP... anyway.. I terminated my contract ( so did my wife and daughter) and just last week went out and bought a second hand squat rack with a bench... so I can just use my corp. gym membership for cardio when I am stressed... and I can go home.. put in the earbuds... and lift *kitten* up and put it back down without having to wait.. and the membership won't cost a dime.

My second wife worked out every day. Racquetball, weights and aerobics. Had a great figure but wasn't cut or anything.

She would come home and eat. She lived on Fried mortadella Sandwiches and Pasta.

When she finally added diet to her workouts, she got in phenomenal shape and left me for her trainer.

If that's all it took, she wasn't much of a loss. :ohwell:
