Not trying to insult anyone's musical preferences (and I could just google this true), but what distinguishes dupstep from other electronic/club music?

DUBSTEP: Typically resides at 140bpm, and tracks typically tend to revolve around the "drop", often after large buildups. The sounds used are often very distorted, and typically tend to have a focus on harsh mid-range sounds. A large bassline also helps to add to the drive of the track. In the early days of the genre, the basslines were usually oscillated, creating the "wub" sound that has become a stereotype of the genre. In addition to this, there are hooks that provide melodic and rhythmic content to the track.

TECHNO: Although many people use Techno synonymously to EDM, today it is a very dark style. Rarely vocals, if ever. A hard bass kick, everything stays in the lower frequencies. BPMs in the 126-128 range. Check out: Alan Fitzpatrick, Julian Jeweil

HOUSE: This is a hard one because there are so many different kinds. but just basic house is a very upbeat, groovy, almost disco-sounding sound. Funky baselines, lots of piano chords. BPMs also in the 126-128 range. Check out: Crazibiza, Phunk Investigation

TECH HOUSE: Pretty much what it sounds like: A more upbeat, house-y version of techno. Tech House has snares on the 2 and 4 beats like House, whereas Techno does not. Similar BPM range. Check out: UMEK, My Digital Enemy, Mark Knight

PROGRESSIVE HOUSE: A lot of dispute on this one lately, as pretty much everything on Beatport gets classified as this. True progressive house is what it sounds like: Progressive. Very slow builds, as a long melodic breakdown (much more focus on the melody than with regular house). BPMs 126-128 as well. Check out: Pryda, Jeremy Olander

TRANCE: My personal favorite. Still 4-on-the-floor beats like the previously mentioned genres, but faster (anywhere from 128 - 140 BPM typically). Much harder, more pronouced kick. Usually melodic vocals, beginning over the kick and leading into a melodic breakdown (the chorus). Huge variance in this category; the slower stuff can sound similar to progressive house (Above & Beyond), while the faster stuff is much harder (not as popular now a days). Check out: Armin Van Buuren, Paul Van Dyk, Above & Beyond

BIG ROOM HOUSE: The name given to the sound currently dominating the Beatport charts. big, generic, electronic-sounding synth melody, followed by a big drop with a huge kick (similar to Trance) but less melodic. Meant to jump up and down to. Usually 128 - 130
BPM. Check Out: W&W, Dimitri Vegas & Like Mike, Showtek (newer stuff)

ELECTRO HOUSE: Kind of like a generic house beat, but lots and lots of different random sounds, bleeps and bloops, hard to describe this one. It's all over the place but some people love that! usually 128 BPM. Check out: Lazy Rich, Wolfgang Gartner, Tommy Trash
