Diabetes

Does MFP recognize the fact that one is Diabetic (Type 2)
I have been told if I get into better shape, I can stave off Type 2.
That's a big reason to use this program to help with my goal.
But, does the program have a way of knowing this?

Thanks

You can set your own goals for calories as well as things like carbs and fat. :)

No, it doesn't. The best thing to do is consult a nutritionist about what is good for your diet. I am predisposed to diabetic (I'm calling it pre-prediabetic). I customized where my calories are coming from. You can adjust the settings when you do your profile. I'm at 35%, 35%, and 30%, carbs, protein, and fat, respectively for where my 1200 calories comes from. This took me down to a 105g carbs and protein, with 45 sugars (within the carbs), and 45 or so of fats.

If you go low carb, you might need to adjust to even lower carb numbers. Since I don't have diabetes yet, I weened myself off of the carbs now (I will see how this affects my triglycerides which were high a year ago).

You can also play around with the different diets that are out there for diabetes. Hope this helps!

Once you get your recommendations from your dietitian, do the following to custom set your macros:

MY HOME > Goals > Change Goals > Custom
  • It's great that you're making changes to prevent diabetes. There's an article here that reviews the results of the diabetes prevention program, and gives recommendations including increased exercise and weight loss: http://www.diabetes.org/newsroom/press-releases/2014/long-term-follow-up-of-diabetes-prevention-program-shows-reduction-in-diabetes-development.html You're making a great start! ~Lynn /Glucerna
