Questions about hypothyroidism

Hey everyone! I have had hypothyroid since I was 11, I am 18 now. I was wondering if anyone here knows what foods I should avoid eating, and which foods I should eat. I don't trust the websites. If anyone knows or is currently on a certain diet please do tell

Thank you
Ginny

  • I'm in the same boat now, I keep hearing low carb diet. A lot of people with hypothyroidism are also allergic to gluten. Whether or not they realize it or not is the difference. Cut out gluten for a few weeks see how you feel. Avoid the "gluten free" labelled food because many times they have additives that are just as bad for you. Good luck!
  • Same here, my doctor told me to avoid carbs, as much as possible. Oops I just got a salad dressing labeled as gluten free today. but I haven't lost any weight. I have only gained weight. My doctor told me that in most cases of hypothyroid it is impossible to lose weight.. That is very discouraging. I was hoping for some positive advice or suggestions, but he said that weight should be the least of my worries cuz it's just not possible :(

That's silly. I've been hypothyroid for decades, and I'm losing weight. I'm doing paleo if that is helpful. My dr never said I couldn't lose weight (he did say it would be harder)

Well, I thought losing weight would be impossible with hypothyroidism, but it wasn't! I am very sensitive to carbs, as well. I normally try to keep it to 1-2 servings a day of whole grain, brown rice, or starchy vegetable. Other than that, lots of berries, veggies, yogurt, cottage cheese, and quality protein. I still have evening snacks, just healthier (usually). It has been working, along with weighing, measuring, and logging. This has been my first success in years!

    Hi folks,

Personally I have never heard of a special diet for this condition, As long as you take the medication and have normal values, there is no reason you shouldn't lose weight. I had my thyroid removed by means of radio-active iodine and put on about 30kg in about six months. It took an age to get the dosage of medication correct, and I am now successfully losing weight - slowly yet surely.

If your doctors aren't taking you seriously then see an endochronologist.

    Good luck!
