Hi, I'm new and am having a go at filling in the food diary on here. Could you let me know whether you add to your diary the calories for vegetables (excluding potatoes) and salad items - as the majority is water.

In previous plans I have tried you did not need to count vegetables and they were free to eat in any quantity (other than potatoes, peas and sweetcorn).

Please could you advise what you do. Many thanks Tash x

Ideally, you would add everything you eat. The food diary isn't just for counting calories, its for tracking nutrition, and for measuring your intake of certain foods. If you share your diary, it can also provide an example of how to eat healthy for those who are looking to put more vegetables in their diet.

That being said, I don't log every single vegetable I eat. If I have a burger, and I get it with Lettuce and Tomato, I'm not going to fret trying to figure out how much lettuce and tomatoes that equates to, since the calorie impact would be negligible. So you definitely don't have to log vegetables as long as their calorie count isn't a lot, but logging them can only be a good thing.
  • I happen to log everything that passes my lips. Everything. This includes oil sprays, pats of butter, vegetables, pinches of salt/seasonings, etc. I know a lot of people don't include these things. So it's probably more of a personal choice. I find that it's really surprising how much those "little " calories actually add up. What I thought was negligible, always ends up being quite significant at the end of the day. 10 cals here, 15 cals there... you'd be surprised.

As the previous poster mentioned, it's also to track my nutritional intake (sodium, fat, sugar), and not just my calories. Also, after awhile you start to see trending too. You'll notice which vegetables tend to fill you up... which veggies don't do a great job of preventing later cravings of salt or sugar, etc...

    Good luck!

Add it all. Veggies and all. Just add what types. Salads add it under spinach, romaine, mixed greens ect.

I add everything. A calorie is a calorie. I also want to see the nutrition side of what I eat when looking back.
  • i tend to add it myself...but there isnt much need considering it takes more energy to digest them than is actualy in them!
  • I add them all too just so I can see my eating pattern and make sure I am getting enough veggies :)

I don't count most veggies, but I also don't over-eat them because they are 'free'.

It’s a good idea to log EVERYTHING and stay in that habit. Logging vegetables is a good idea b/c it can help you monitor you other nutritional goals rather than just weight-loss calories most notably vitamin C and fiber to see if you are hitting your quota for those 2 nutrients.
  • I feel I am being true to myself by logging EVERYTHING.
