Okay, so alot of people eat a Christmas ham during the holidays as tradition. Well, before I started MFP, I didn't mind it a bit and wouldn't listen to my body. NOW, this year, we still did the ham. I won't lie, I indulged. lol To say the least. TODAY, I feel like a fricken swollen blob and miserable and dehydrated. Here's the deal. This is the part where I'm conflicted. On the one hand I would LOVE to throw it out so I don't keep harming my body. On the other, I don't want to waste food that we paid good money for. I want YOU to vote to a)throw it out or b)keep it. Thanks, guys.

Remember, this is just for fun. Not up for scrutiny or opinions OR recipes that I can throw the ham into, cuz I won't end up doing it. LOL

Well how much is left? Can you make a soup either using the meat or the bone for flavoring?

I would trim it up cutting out all the fat and the glaze rind and keep about half of it for sandwichs for your family, or mac and cheese with ham for the kids and throw the rest. That way you won't be eating it forever and won't feel too guilty for throwing some if it out.

I was thinking split pea, but that has lots of sodium as well. I LOVE split pea soup!

I say keep it and break it up into small portions and freeze it. You can use it on cheat days, or days where you don't have the time to cook and just throw it on some lettuce or bread. I always feel guilty when I waste food!
  • Woow...great responses....Hope you dont mind, I took a couple ideas from here. thanks!! Oh, but I def would not throw it out!

    I have two votes here:

    1. It's as much of a waste to eat it if you don't need it (throw it out). 2. If you know you could use it later; freeze it (keep it). Eat it but drink lots of water and include it in your meal plans (keep it).

    Looks like keep it win.

This is a good idea! If you are like me and lack self discipline, throw it away or you will eat it all! Or, take it and share it at work or with friends, so it's not wasted, but you don't eat it all :)

Is it the same as we call a gammon? I roasted mine in maple syrup, but I don't eat ham so it's not an issue for me.

I would not throw it away, that is a waste. I would just eat a bit in moderation and also drink plenty of water, I would make a soup with it too. Pea and ham is lovely!
  • I think you should keep it, but maybe give some of it away to others. No sense letting good food go to waste.

I absolutely loathe waste...slice and freeze it. Remember to drink extra fluids when you have any of it (and any other salty foods) but it can still be enjoyed as part of a balanced diet. Most things can be...this is where moderation comes in, eat a whole 4lb gammon ham and you're going to suffer but eat 4lbs of "healthy" cabbage and you'll suffer too (along with everyone around you!)

I don't have any problem tossing stuff so that would be my first inclination. Either that or give it to my x-husband who will eat anything. I wouldn't eat it just because I had if it didn't fit in my plan. :)

That's how much I have left too and it makes me feel like bloated crap.

So I'm leaving it in the fridge until I know I shouldn't eat it anymore, that way I can throw it away without my husband saying, hey what happened to the ham?

I can say OMG I forgot all about it and it went bad...muhahahaha.

Throw it out. I don't believe in keeping foods that are ultimately going to effect my body or mind for that matter.

That was my plan(out of sight, out of mind), but like I said, I HATE wasting food.

    Send it to me.

    Ham & Split Pea Soup
    Ham & Cheese Omelettes
    Ham & Beans
    Ham Fried Rice
Ham & Leftover Stuffing Egg Rolls

    Don't get me started.

We did not go traditional this year. We had Lasagna. I'm not throwing the leftovers out either. Been Feeding all my daughter's friends.

Take you leftover ham, make Ham sandwiches and head down to your nearest off ramp and feed the homeless. Don't waste the food.

Ham sammies...and tons of water. Yesterday I weighed in at 231, consumed 160oz of water and was 227.8 today. On the elliptical last night I think I has salt residue on my skin.

You had 20 glasses of water? How the hell did you do that without shutting down your kidneys? I also think you meant 227.8 haha

At our house any meat that doesn't get eaten OR anything I accidently defrost (this happens more than I'd like to admit since I fail to read the butchers labels on the meat) gets grilled on the G.Foreman and promptly given to the dogs :) any left over vegetables from dinners or fruits that are starting to get old go to the horses - my pets REALLY love me!
