Scared of scales.

So, I'm scared of owning a scale again.
Not, because I'm scared of seeing what it says. I know roughly what I weigh right now. Last time I stepped on a scale was about 2 years ago and I can wear the same clothes, so I know I'm within 10 pounds of that. I'm scared of scales because I know I get addicted to them.
5 years ago I wrapped up 150 pound weightloss (that I've pretty well maintained), and in the process of losing it I became OBSESSED with the scale. I would weigh myself like 20 times a day. It was all I could think about. I didn't feel like it was a healthy thing.
So, now I don't know what to do. I want to be able to hold myself accountable to my goals, but I don't want to get wrapped up in an unhealthy head game again.
Has anyone else had a similar experience?
How can I start weighing myself again without become attached to the scale?

hey
I don't own a set of scales, and a bit like you, I went through a stage where I hadn't weighed myself in a looooog time.. This doesn't work for everyone, but this is what I do. Since I go to the the gym a few times a week, I hop on the scales there mayb 2 or 3 times a week to see roughly where I'm at, but I only weigh myself on the scales you pay for once a month for my official weight.. which is when I update my weight on here..
Like I said, many people on here find that once a month official weigh-in is to long, I have a feeling that like you, if i had sclaes at home I would be on them too much..
Either way whetever you decided I hope it works for you, and this site is great for helping to reach your goal and meet like-minded people
good luck :-)

It is hard not to become addicted to the scale. If you really want to get one, you could ask your fiance to be responsible for it and only let you use it on a predetermined schedule. Or you could just get a measuring tape and track your weight loss that way. The scale can be an inaccurate representation of fitness as it measures everything all at once, where as a measuring tape only measures one area of the body at a time.
As has been the case for me, the scale hasn't been moving much lately, but the measuring tape indicates a skinnier me. The nice thing about the measuring tape is that you only need to do it on a monthly basis. It's only a matter of keeping track of what day you're supposed to measure.0 -

I think this is a horrible idea! You must be accountable for your own actions! Get your best friend one so you have to go to her house to weigh. Or worse, your in-laws!0 -
I usually weigh everyday every morning.
I have decided not to let the numbers get
to me. I never weighed before at all and gained
30 pounds over time. I have to weigh in
to keep me deciplined. Everyone is different.
Try once a week see where that goes for you.:happy:0 -
I step on the scale once a week, first thing Saturday mornings. I might step on at other times but only log the Saturday morning - weigh fluctuates. The number on the scale doesn't mean a whole lot, especially when you are working out. At first I was letting that number get me down. For two months it didn't budge. Then - I think it had to do with getting more protein - it dropped.
I bought a body fat caliper and I go with that. Even though the scale number hadn't moved I lost about 2% body fat (2mm on the caliper). I lost an inch on my waist and an inch on my hips.
If you want to get scale you will have to just fight the urge or don't let the number bother you.0 -
I'm with you...when I first lost 30lbs, I was on the scale all the time. I stepped on the scale before I ate, after I ate, every time I took a sip of water, you name it. It was pretty awful because it made me pretty crazy (I would start freaking out because I "gained" 1/2lb after eating lunch), and my husband would cringe every time I went to the bathroom (where the scale was).
I started putting the scale away after each use. Up in the back of the linen closet - where I had to get out the step ladder to reach. It took a while but I was able to ween myself off the scale, and after a while, I was OK with just weighing myself once every other day.
This time around, I haven't done that yet (but just started yesterday - so plenty of time for my crazy to settle in still), but if I find myself obsessing over the scale, I have the perfect spot for it (top of the kitchen cabinets, that requires that I climb on top of the counters to reach).
Good luck!0 -
Do you have a gym membership? Maybe you could weigh in there so that you can save the money on the scale and the possibility of weighing 20 times a day??0
