I posted this as a blog, but thought I'd post over here too in case anyone wants to post their goals and plan to make a change in 2011. So, read my plans and then post your own!
As you may or may not know, I don't do New Years Resolutions. I think they are just a silly statement that people make on New Years Eve to be a better person and then forget about as soon as the champagne wears off. Even if they remember them, they don't keep going after 3 months. That being said, I do believe in setting goals. The difference is that goals are planned out, including the steps that are needed to achieve them, and not just something set on a whim. So, when I set my goals for the year, I plan them out using a planner system I learned years ago. I base my goals on my values in life. And then I plan the steps to take to achieve my goals. In the system I learned, I not only look at my goals for the specific year, but at the person I want to be. I picture myself 5 or 10 years down the road and imagine what I've done with my life. I also look at how I want people to remember me when I'm gone. From that I devise a mission statement. My mission statement is:
"I will be the best ME I can be.
I will not allow the opinions of others to deter me from my goals.
I will push myself to be as strong and healthy as possible.
I will push myself to learn as much as possible.
I will use my knowledge and abilities to help others."
My goals are then based on how they can help me achieve the person I want to be. So, here are mine for 2011, in no particular order.
Goal: I will bench press 200 pounds for 6 sets of 12 reps by December 31, 2011.
Steps: One Rep Max Test by 1/1/11; Follow individual training plans each month; Reasses every 3 months to see how to adjust the training.

Steps: Talk to physical therapists to set up locations (This step is done); Schedule times to volunteer; Just do it!
