Some nutritionists say natures best food...
If there was only one thing I could eat, I would choose milk!

I average about a qt a day but if I wasn't watching my cals, etc I would probably be at about half gal.

 Kinda depends who you ask. There are those who would say sat fat is the devil. I say as long as you're making it work for your nutritional needs, then go for it. If you have trouble losing weight, then maybe think about cutting back or gradually weening yourself onto lower fat milk. Of course, if it was me, I'd be looking more at added sugar, salt, and processed foods as targets for blame than the milk.
  • I LOVE my milk. I have been able to drop down to 1% instead of 2%, but there is just no way that I can drink Skim. Kind of like when you buy the fat free butter or cheese verses the low fat stuff. The fat free tastes like crap, but the reduced fat is tolerable. As much as I hear about fat not being good for you, it always seems to be in the stuff that tastes good...LOL I would tell you to keep drinking it and try the 1%. There isn't a large difference from the 2% and it definitely isn't Skim which just tastes awful to me.

Love it! I can tolerate 1% but have trouble with 2%. Whole milk is right out! Can't stomach it. I just stick to skim. One glass for my morning cereal or meal, and maybe a glass for dinner.

Maybe if its organic and non fat its ok. But if you think about it we were never meant to drink milk from other creatures. If its not organic its most likely full of hormones and antibiotics and lord knows what else. I suggest reading the book Skinny B i t c h.

Yeah, the hormones and antibiotics aren't good. :frown: You can at least find milk with labels that state it wasn't treated with hormones. That's a step in the right direction. Since I don't drink a ton of it, I'm thinking it would be worth the extra little bit of expense to switch to organic myself. Non fat, never.

go for 2% or lower and by all means, drink a lot of water if you have high milk intake so you can expel that excess calcium which causes kidney stones

i am probably the biggest animal freak in the world so pls i already know all about what were not suppose to eat. I sure dont need lectures on that. Im usually the one giving the lectures. lol
  • So, you already know about factory farming and cruelty to animals and the hormones and infections of udders and pus in your milk, and, of course, how humans are the only type of animal on the entire planet that drink another animal's milk (meanwhile people think the concept of a wet nurse is disgusting).

On top of all of that, your intestines are not designed to digest milk after the age of three (aka around the time you may stop feeding via breast milk (if you haven't been weaned already)). Milk is very, VERY hard to digest and you have 16 feet of intestines for it to travel through before it arrives at its exit. Do you wonder why people suffer from so many stomach aches? Or why lactose intolerance is on the rise? I've encountered individuals so allergic that if dairy or their by-products even touch their skin, they go into anaphylactic (sp?) shock.

There are a number of alternatives: coconut milk, almond milk, soy milk, rice milk... and they all take getting used to. After I stopped drinking milk, I tried soy right away and it was like drinking chalk. Once my body had time to adjust to not getting milk, the other kinds started tasting better. I love the vanilla flavoured kinds (soy and rice) and use the "original" flavour for any recipes requiring milk.

I peeked at your profile and your intentions here/inspirations and giving up dairy will help you lose weight and make you healthier. I went vegan (I'd already been vegetarian prior) and as a sweet side effect, I dropped 25 pounds. Good luck! =)

I'm the total opposite - I can't stand it! I have to consciously eat or drink other things to get my calcium in. Even chew two Tums a day. I have no idea why I can't drink it. Oh, I can with enough chocolate syrup in it, though.

Ditto! I was forced to drink it as a child. Now, you couldn't pay me to drink it straight. To me, it's just a vehicle for chocolate syrup or cereal.

The calcium in milk, unless you drink a load of the stuff, is not going to cause you kidney stones. You're more likely to get a calcium-oxalate stone from eating too many vegetables than you are from milk. For a majority of people who suffer calcium-oxalate kidney stones, it's actually better to drink more milk, IN MODERATION, while reducing the oxalate intake...not the other way around.

Drinking a lot of water, as well as eating fruits high in citric acid (unless your doctor has told you to limit your acid consumption), will help to prevent another kidney stone.

I would say if your such a big "animal freak" then you would not drink it at all in the first place. Its pointless to drink milk really, I have not had it in years

Um... I drink half a cup of milk in my coffee every day. Thats all. When I was younger I liked it cold with honey, and I hated warm.

Milk is not pointless and to say so is ridiculous. Dont drink a gallon a day, but one glass of milk every morning is great.

Milk is very good for you. Skim milk is best to avoid the saturated fat that has been linked to atherosclerosis. But the milk itself is fine. It takes 4 glasses a day to get all your calcium from it and I'm not sure I could drink that much. Also, milk has been shown to help alleviate the symptoms of PMS. Bonus!
