Predicting weight loss using calorie counting and no scales?

Hey y'all!

Just wanted to ask if anyone has ever guessed their weight loss in the long term, before stepping on the scales to see that they're accurate?
I 'calorie counted' that i had GAINED 2kg the past 6 months, and 6 months later when i finally was able to brave the scales it said i was 2kg lighter haha.

Don't worry - im not a newbie, i know there are different calories and that 1000 calories from vegetables are different to 1000 calories of fries. But still, can CC be accurate?

Is it possible to be super honest about what you eat and predict what you gained or lost through CC in long term period of a few months to a year, and later realise you were right when you weigh yourself?

I think im asking this for more curiosity than anything to be honest haha. Though i guess this topic would also be useful to those who don't own a scale =]
