Running with bone spurs

Does anyone have experience with bone spurs in their knees? This year I started running for the first time in years with quick success. Unfortately, I got over zealous in September and was diagnosed with "Runner's Knee" (patella femoral syndrome,) bone spurs behind the knee cap and early stage of osteoarthritis in the knees. Since then, I do my physical therapy exercises that the orthopedic sports medicine doctor gave me. Not every day but almost every day. They get too easy and boring. I been taking glucosamine supplements with vitamin D. I started other exercises such as walking outdoors, then progressed to low impact aerobics, even tae bo with little problems. I can tell I really improved.

Then last week I wear these rocking toner shoes for a whole day of walking around house doing house work. I realized that I probably should wear them the whole day. But still, no real problems but did feel tenderness. For the first time a couple days ago.... I start doing treadmill jogging and running for about 15 minutes - my right knee is numb probably due to an impinged nerve from the bone spurs. Tonight I did the treadmill and again got numb in my right knee. But had a couple of slipping action on my left knee cap and the pain was sharp! So since late September, I am still not healed. I miss running so much! I am so frustrated. Going to make another appointment with the sports medicine doctor for my follow up visit in January or February. Any suggestions or related experiences?

  • I had a bone spur and a small piece of bone had also broken off in front of it so it was very painful at times. I could not kneel on my knees at all and sometimes my knee would almost give out. I had surgery and had the spur removed. I don't know if that is an option for you, but other than the scar, i'm glad i did it. It takes quite a bit of recovery time. The healing process went pretty fast, but I have just recently gotten to where it feels pretty much normal again. I still have to be careful when kneeling on my knees, but i can do it now. I had my surgery June of 09. I just started trying to run on my treadmill yesterday and only did a half mile, but it felt pretty good. My knee could have handled more, I am just too out of shape for more! lol. Maybe talk to your doctor about a surgery? At least ask about pros and cons cause I know every case is different and it sounds like you have more than one spur where i only had one. but at least worth asking about. it will delay your running for longer, but better in the long run if it corrects the issue and pain! good luck!!

Thanks for sharing! I also have tenderness when kneeling at times. Its scary to make a decision about surgery when you really don't know if your going to benefit. I guess it is one day at a time. Good luck with your recovery!

I had a friend with a similar recurring issue. Get with your doctor before you damage it. She ended up having to have surgery, but it was much better that they identified it and treater before additional harm was done.

Good luck!!! I hope you are back on your running legs soon.

Thanks! I also heard that if you had a ligament tear, its better to get surgery soon or can cause degeneration on down the road if ignored. My doctor didn't believe I had any tears back in October. Maybe he might think differently now. I also considered getting a second opinion from another orthopedic doctor.
