Pull-Ups Hurt Hands

I am 6 weeks into P90X and have been doing a lot of pull-ups. Every time I am done with my workout my hands ache and they turn red. I need some help! I feel like I am going to get arthritis.

I'm a dip... pay no attention to me.
  • Have you considered push up bars? With P90x you have to be careful with some of the push up positions, and some you'll have to do without, but push up bars will put the pressure in what my prove to be a more manageable position...

How do I cure this ache for pull-ups? Push-ups don't really hurt my hands.

Studying for the LSATs have my eyes crossed... read it completely wrong...

    How about gloves?

I do use gloves, although, I think the gloves may hurt my hands more because they don't fit right.
  • Get rid of the gloves for a while. Build up some calluses.

Sounds like you may have answered your own question... if your gloves are moving and shifting, it'll rub your hand raw. Give it a go with dry bare hands. Do you have a bare bar or one with padding? I've found padding, especially when my hands are sweaty, will do the very same thing...

i had this problem too. go buy a pair of gloves that fit you well and buy them in store so you can try them on. it'll make a world of difference, even if you have to pay a little more. my hands still turn red, but they aren't nearly as bad as doing pull ups bare or with ill-fitting gloves. i actually picked up a pair of cross fit gloves since they're padded, but not overly so.

Do your pull-ups without gloves. After a month or so you'll notice no pain and significant increase on grip strength. You will develop calluses but won't look bad if you keep it moisturized throughout the day

    well here's the thing.

Are you in PAIN? or you just uncomfortable??

because PAIN means you should go see your doctor... if you are just uncomfortable because it's uncomfortable and there for it hurts- that's a different ball of wax.

I hurt all the time at my gym- my first round of squats flat out sucks- I hurt- pull ups hurt my hands- cable rows- late press downs- holding dumbbells- they all hurt... but none of them cause me pain.

up right rows- those cause me PAIN- so I don't do them.

Figure out the difference between the two- and if one is pain- then stop and see your doctor- if the other just is uncomfortable hurting- suck it up butter cup and get tough.

    Sometimes your hands hurt.

Hands are a amazingly complicated thing filled with bones, ligaments, muscle.

What specifically hurts? Are we talking weak grip? Tendonitis? Is it hurt? Pain? Does it make you urinate yourself and call for your mom? Or is it like... aw, that pot was a little warm.

You'll need to learn the difference between being uncomfortable and being injured.
