Falafals

A drained can of chickpeas

I tablespoon of cumin

1-2 garlic cloves

1 teaspoon of ground coriander

1 small onion

1 teaspoon of smoked paprika

1 Fresh chilli

1 small beaten egg

2 tablespoons of Lemon Juice

Salt/pepper

Cilantro or parsley

( you don't have to have the herbs, use mixed dried if you want, and if you don't have a lot of the spices... cumin is fine on its own, also chilli powder is ok instead of fresh )

Around 110 cals per falafel.... makes 6

Heat 1 teaspoon oil in a large pan, then fry the onion and garlic over a low heat for 5 mins until softened. Tip into a large mixing bowl with the chickpeas and spices, then mash together with a fork or potato masher until the chickpeas are totally broken down. Stir in the parsley or dried herbs, with seasoning to taste. Add the egg, then squish the mixture together with your hands.

Mold into 6 small patties and leave to harden a bit in the fridge.

Then rub a small amount of olive oil ( a teaspoon ) into a non stick pan, doing this I need less oil and then fry on each side for 3 mins until golden brown and firm.

I personally serve with a carrot, cilantro, tomato, cucumber and feta ( small amount to flavour ) salad and dress it with balsamic vinegar and hot sauce for the falafel or a tablespoon of hummus.

These taste lovely cold for your lunch with salad, or in a wholemeal pitta with lots of raw spinach,, hummus and hot sauce if you have the extra calories for the hummus and pitta... adapt it as you will : )

I have had these in a pita with sliced red onion, lemon juice, and yogurt.... These are soooooo good. Thanks for posting this!
  • I love yogurt with these actually.... : ) yum

They are traditionally served with Tahini which is soooooo calorific, but if you water down some hummus slightly... its very similar because its made with a small amount of tahini anyway and less heavy

Yum, I've never made falafals but love them. I might put this into lunch rotation.

I just made falafels for the first time the other day, and loved them! So easy to make. My recipe was similar but called for dried chick peas and deep frying. I look forward to using less oil the way you do in your recipe the next time. I also made my own pita bread for the first time along with the falafels. It tastes so different from store bought. Thanks for posting this!

Great with tzatziki instead of hummous! It's made with Greek yogurt, garlic, salt, finely diced or grated cucumber and lemon. It's supposed to have oilive oil too but you can skip that and the salt too if you really want to.
  • Sounds great!! : )

Here is a baked version for anyone interested. They still turn out crispy and I find them easier to make this way.
