I can run for 30 minutes, now what?!?

Hey guys, I recently completed the running app 'Get Running' which has me running 30 minutes but still under the 5K goal. I went to the gym after completing the app to run and felt really confused/lost because I had used that app for my entire running journey and doing it on my own (without the encouragements) felt super weird.

I am a budding runner and really enjoy running outside and on a treadmill but I want to up my mileage and I have been looking for apps to help me with that. FYI: I am at school, so i mostly run on a treadmill now, so apps like nike running and runkeeper haven't worked out.

HELP!
*I lost 13 pounds this summer using the app and I don't want to fall off the 'wagon' now.

  • I'm not sure why Nike + isn't working for you.

That's what I use for both my treadmill and outdoor runs & it works well for me. Just be mindful to change your settings from indoors 9for treadmill) to outdoors (for outdoor running).

As for another app, I used to use C 2 5K (Couch 2 5KM) and since completion of that I am now on the 5 to 10KM.

Do you have music as you're running?

I find I can't exercise without music...just becomes long tedious and boring for me...I will just focus on what I am doing. With music I focus on enjoying the music and before I know it, I've ran 3km!

Sign up for a 10k (maybe there's one around Thanksgiving in your area??) and then do a 6 or 8 week training plan to get there! From Runner's World, etc. Having a goal to work towards is the best way to keep expanding your mileage.

Try a C210K app. The first half is the C25K app, so you can start somewhere in the middle.

This MFP group is very active, friendly and informative: http://www.myfitnesspal.com/groups/home/526-bridge-to-10k
Maybe check it out and see if you'd like to join. They are a great source of encouragement if you're running alone.

Congratulations on running for 30 minutes! That's great! Don't worry about your distance. I still can't run 5K in 30 minutes but enjoy the running.

    Set some new goals;

    10K?
    Improved running form?

here are two books which might give you some help.

Marathoning for Mortals: A Regular Person's Guide to the Joy of Running or Walking a Half-Marathon or Marathon

Running for Mortals: A Commonsense Plan for Changing Your Life With Running

Get out and run outside if you can. I started from just being able to run 3 miles to doing 1/2 marathon in about 14 weeks. Go slow and easy, you will improve. Also runkeeper and Hal Higdon have some good free training plans. Setting a goal to finish an event and actually reaching that goal is an amazing feeling.
