Dads and daughters

I usually don't get choked up very often. When it comes to my daughter, well...
One of the best days is when Madison gives me a hug and says, "I love you daddy." I love watching her grow up. From the time I would watch her as a baby; feeding her, changing her diaper, playing my guitar so she would fall asleep at night. As a toddler she would follow me around everywhere. I would park my truck outside the house after work and she would run up to the window. She would wave at me and then run outside to give me a hug.
When she was 4, I would take her mountain bike riding. I would strap her in the bike seat hooked on the back of my bike and she would yell "faster daddy." Until the one time the bike seat fell off the bike and she went flying off. Scared me to death. I ran up to her and she looked at me and said, "Look daddy, a butterfly." I had some allergies that day, my eyes were watery for some reason.
I love all the drawings and notes from her. I loved coaching her softball and talking about fear, timidity, and how God is with us at all times. Even the times she would argue with me, I couldn't help thinking about how much I love her.
She is now in her "Tweens." Her tastes are changing and she wants her independence a little more each day. It's so hard not to keep her locked up with me for the rest of her life, but I know I have to loosen my hand a little each day. I keep praying and hoping all of my hugs, kisses, and little talks have captured her heart so she makes wise decisions.
For now, we share playing the guitar together. I'm hoping to get her back into guitar lessons soon. I plan on taking her out on "dates," because I know boys are a topic just around the corner. I'm so proud of her and she definitely has me wrapped around her finger. Damn it, I have allergies again.
Dads with daughters, take the time to pour into them because it goes quick. I found these Daddy and Daughter date ideas. Have fun!...

You made me cry. Today is my Dad's birthday, he passed 14 years ago and obviously today he has been on my mind more than usual.
There is nothing and I mean nothing as special as the relationship a daughter has with her Daddy. He is the first man she will love, he teaches her what a good man is and that she deserves a good man. My dad taught me all the important things I needed, to be strong, how to love, how I should be treated, how to change a tire and do a tune up Your daughter will always need you and always look to you guidance. When she is faced with tough decisions she will stop and wonder what dad would advise. I know I still do.
As the teen years approach she may pull away some, looking for that independence we for some reason think we need at 14. But trust me she will come back and you will always be her Daddy and she will always be your little girl.
Thank you for writing this. I know it was something you wrote for you, but it was something I needed to read today.
Hugs. I posted this poem on my FB page today, it's long, but worth the read.
In Your Heart
He was so proud of his little girl
It was her very first day of school
He walked with her to school that day
And she held his hand all the way
They walked together quiet and sad
A little girl and her loving dad
Into the school her father led
But he almost cried when she said
Daddy, Daddy please don't go
Don't leave me here all alone
I'll miss you if you go away
And I might need you, can't you stay
Little Daughter please don't cry
You'll be okay so dry your eyes
You have our memories in your heart
We're together though we're apart
He sat up front on her wedding day
And cried as his daughter walked away
Later that night he watched her dance
He sat there waiting for his chance
The band started to play their song
Father and daughter danced along
She looked at him and saw a tear
Then leaned and whispered in his ear
Daddy, Daddy I have to go
I hate to leave you all alone
I'll miss you when I go away
But if you need me then I'll stay
Little Daughter I'll be just fine
I'll love you always you are mine
I have our memories in my heart
We're together though we're apart
She came in his room and kissed his head
Then sat next to his hospital bed
He took her hand and held it tight
And wished he had the strength to fight
They sat together quiet and sad
A daughter and her dying dad
He saw the tears she tried to hide
She looked at him and then she cried
Daddy, Daddy please don't go
Don't leave me here all alone
I'll miss you when you go away
I still need you, you have to stay
Little Daughter I love you so
I want to stay but have to go
I'll always be here in your heart
We're together though we're apart0 -
Thank you! I just felt like I needed to share this today. I know we are suppose to be on the fitness topic, but I couldn't help it.0

Thanks for sharing!
I love my dad so much! He's a wonderful man and we get along so well with lots of laughs. Even closer after mom died. He's 80 but super functional and fun. I'll be so sad to see him go.0 -
OP, just know that she'll venture out, but if you have a great relationship, she'll always be your girl and the bond will only be stronger. It's amazing.0

Dads and daughters never end. My little girl is now a wonderful wife and mother to a teenage boy. But always has time to send her Papa an I Love You text, at the very least a couple times a week. She lives on the other side of the country now but she is always in my heart.
All the best to you and your daughter they grow quickly and even with the heartache they give us sometimes, they will always be our little girls.0 -

As a stay at home dad (yes I stay at home more than I work), I have to agree with this. I am enjoying and savoring the time I spend with my daughter. As most will say, it seems just a short time ago when she was a toddler. She's 10 now and I know the challenging years are approaching.
What I hope to instill in her though is that she doesn't have to "settle" for just the cute guy. I show her love and respect and personally haven't had to raise a hand to her at all. I'm hoping that she'll see that a man (especially now with how some athletes are treating their SO's) should respect her and never needs to lay a forceful hand on her.
It's going to go fast I know. I just want to get out as much of it as I can, while I can.
Lol, in fact. I'm getting off now to go play a game of Monopoly (her favorite) with her.

As a new father of a 4 month old baby girl I must say I am looking forward to sharing these same memories with my daughter...although I don't play the guitar. Thanks for sharing.0

I have three daughters. When the youngest was born, I started saving various things for her in a box. Included is a cassette tape of the song below. My plan was to give her the box on her 21st birthday. She'll be 21 in two weeks. Time goes by so very fast.

To a Sleeping Beauty -- Jimmy Dean
Dear daughter I tiptoed to your room tonight
And I looked down at you smiling in your sleep
You were so lovely my heart nearly broke
And I thought how very much like sleeping beauty a little girl is
When I tuck you in at night I never know how old you'll be when you wake
One evening you crawl on your dad's lap and throw your arms around his neck
The next morning you might be much too grownup for that sort of thing
You're so quickly approachin' my awkward age
Too young to drive a car and yet too old to be carried
Into the house half asleep on daddy's shoulder
I have a secret that I've never told you Sleeping Beauty
You're going on a very exciting trip
You'll travel from yesterday all the way to tomorrow
It's a rapid journey and you'll travel light
Leavin' behind your measles mumps freckles bumps bubblegum and me
I promise not to feel too hurt when you discover
That the world is more important than your daddy's lap
Yesterday you were blue-jeaned and pig-tailed the neighborhood's best tree-climber
Tomorrow you'll be blue-organdie and ponny-tailed
And you'll view the world from a loftier perch a pair of high-heel shoes
Yesterday you could mend a doll's broken leg with a hug
Tomorrow you'll be able to break a young man's heart with a kiss
Ha ha yesterday you could get lost one aisle away from me in a supermarket
Now I have to worry about losin' you down another aisle to some strange young man
You see just at the point where your growing pains stop mine begin
Yesterday you were kind of a pain in the neck when you were around
Tomorrow you'll be an ache in my heart when you're not
Tomorrow you'll lay aside your jumprope and tie up the telephone lines
And that little boy that used to push you in the mud
Well he'll fight to set out a dance with you
The clock upstairs is countin' the minutes for you
And the sky upstairs is savin' its brightest stars
And the sun is waitin' with its shinest day
Oh I can't expect you to live in a dollhouse forever
Sooner or later the butterfly sheds its cocoon and the smallest bird must try its wings
But when you grow up and out of my arms when you finally get too big for my shirts
I'll still recall how you used to scatter dust and dolls
And partially through every room in the house but you spread sunshine too
The dust is settled your mom picked up the dolls
But the sunshine will always fill the corners of our hearts
So here I am talkin' in your sleep
Because well if you saw this look on my face you'd laugh
And if I spoke with this lump in my throat I'd cry
Yeah honey when I looked at you tonight you were a Sleeping Beauty
So I tiptoed over and I kissed you you didn't wake up I knew you wouldn't
According to the legend only the handsome young prince can open your eyes
And I'm just the father of a future bride
So you sleep on pretty thing tomorrow you'll awake and you'll be a young lady
And you won't even realize that you've changed courses in the middle of a dream
But you might notice this little change in me
I look a little different somehow a little sadder a little wiser but a whole lot richer
Tonight I kissed a princess and I feel like a king0 -
You'll lose her in her teens, but you'll get her back someday. My dad is one of my best friends and he is my favorite cycling partner. I wish my daughter had the same love from her dad.0

Tugging on the heartstrings over here.
My Dad passed about 4 years ago, but I still think and talk of him all the time because of the impact he made in my life.
We also used to go on father-daughter dates. Though...they were definitely centered around his interests. We would drive around town and put up signs regarding whatever political fight he was up to at the moment, or drive over and get ice cream. My dad could always be talked around to ice cream.
OP: I know she's lucky to have you and will cherish these moments throughout her life.0 -
❤️
I was a daddy's girl. I was lucky to have him for 19 years. I used to think about how he was taken from me too soon. How much I was robbed by not having him long enough. But now I feel honor and blessed I got to see him every day for 18 years. How he was there. How we went on hikes every Saturday, rain, shine or snow. How I used to nap with him after those hikes. How he used to make me laugh. Now I have his sense of humor. Now I get to take my sons hiking, nap with them, and make them laugh. Because of these things, my dad lives on.
Thank you for being a wonderful father. ❤️0 -
What a sweet post. I have so much love and respect for my Dad (he's 70 years old now). You are building some pretty great memories. What's the old saying...A son's a son till he takes a wife, a daughter's a daughter for the rest of her life.0
