Can an American quickly explain you dress sizes to me?

In the UK, its just even numbers. You're either a 4, 6, 8, 10, 12, 14 or so on.

I thought US sizes were also even numbers (2, 4, 6, 8 and so on) and 4 numbers smaller than UK (i.e. US 8 is about a UK 12).

But in a couple movies, and recently on MFP I've seen and heard people mention sizes 3 and 5 and 7 and other odd numbers.

Can someone explain if there's 2 systems, or whether a 3 is simply halfway between a 2 and 4 but just less common to find in shops, or something like that?

I've just been wondering! Thanks.

The odd numbers are junior's sizing. The even numbers are women's sizing.

The 3, 5, and 7 are close to the same size below (a 7 is about the same size as a 6) except cut for juniors (not curvy). Usually clothing that comes in juniors sizing is geared toward teenagers and is cheap in quality and trendy in design.

I assumed junior once because Hollister uses odd sizing and that's for teens but in Mean Girls (yes, making reference to that film again) one of the girls - who isn't exactly that young/small - tries on a size 5 dress which is stocked in sizes 1,3, and 5.

And just saw a MFP post from a 60 year old woman saying her top was a size 3.

    Just confused me…
