okay, maybe someone on here knew but I sure didn't. Found this in looking up lactic acid - as the article says, thought it had something to do with muscle soreness but it doesn't apparently. Huh...

and another that confirms this conclusion, with some differing opinions on soreness - but offers routine suggestions (appear to be mostly weight lifting related - but could probably be applied to many workouts) to encourage muscle development.
