When to start looking for a new job...
Love my job and my boss. I work 27.5 hours per week which gives me time to also be involved in my three girls' lives which is important since my husband commutes 1.5 hr in one direction everyday into NYC. But my boss is 70 and is now sick (not sure how serious). I don't want to leave him because in all honesty, he's been a great friend to me and I don't want to leave him without anyone to help him in the office, but neither me or my husband have gotten a raise in three years and unemployment would be really hard to live off of especially with the holidays coming. Would you start looking for a job? I've been praying that God give me a sign or give one of us the strength to have the "where's the future leading the business" talk.

You can always look. Just don't quit until you have another one lined up.0

Yep, this would be my best advice as well.0 -

^^ Totally this. Always keep your eyes open and definitely wait until you have something else to leave. You have to think of your family first.0 -
^^^^ Agreed. Sending positive vibes to your boss tho!0

It sounds like it is a good time to spruce up your resume and put out some feelers.0

I'm assuming your boss is the owner of the company... And as a business owner, he should know by now how to separate the business from the personal. While I'm sure he'd appreciate you sticking around, I'm also sure he'd understand you needing to look out for your own interests. I'd also assume he's put some contingencies in place for if/when he passes away. It might not hurt to ask the question. If you can't ask him, maybe there's someone else in the company you can ask? It's perfectly reasonable to want to know what the future holds so you can plan accordingly.0

Is your boss the entire business? It sounds like you're concerned he will drop dead from his sickness - what happens to the business? There's no one to take over? If it's a kind of business you can run you should be talking to him about what his plans are - he won't live forever.
That being said, why would you ever quit a job until you had a new one if you didn't have to?0 -
Ask for a raise?0

Why not just schedule a meeting to discuss receiving a raise with your boss? Sometimes, all it takes is to ask.0

No matter how much you love your boss or the place you work, you and your family need to be the #1 priority. Do what's best for your family.0

I think the fact you're even considering it is a sign.
I know how tough it can be, but trust your gut. Don't let overthinking the situation cause you unnecessary stress.
Best of luck.0 -

I'm not sure where in Jersey you live (I live in Bergen County), but I worked in staffing for most of my career and am still in touch with a lot of the recruiters I used to work with. So if you'd like to send me a PM I can give you some contacts.
And yes - it doesn't hurt to look. It looks better to a hiring manager that you're still employed but looking.0
