Water retention

I have read that when you start exercising your body will retain extra water weight for a while. How long is this?
I have been moderately active for a couple of years (about 20 flights of stairs a day - live in a 3 story house), but have recently went to 3 miles a day and some classes instead of running that day (still doing the same amount of stairs).
Thanks

I usually gain 3-4 lbs at the beginning of any new program or when I increase intensity and it lasts around a week and then falls right back off. I've found that watching my sodium more carefully and making sure to get in my fluids and protein has helped with the beginning soreness as well as the retention.0
