Shin Splints

Recently, when I walk I'm getting terrible shin splints to the point that I have to stop... sometimes even sit and try to stretch them out. Needless to say this is a pain when I have the dog with me!!
So here's the scoop... I walk at a pretty good pace, on a sidewalk, twice a day, with a dog, in sneakers.
My sneakers are 5 years old BUT I only wore them in those 5 years for physical therapy which consisted of a stationary bike and weight machines so despite their age they are still fairly new. The padding and insoles are still in really good condition.
So what can I do to reduce the splints? Should I be walking differently... wearing different shoes (My sneaks are Adidas cross trainers), stretching before walks... or after... or both?
HELP!!!! This is starting to limit my walks!!

Ouch! I get those sometimes. I have sneakers and I buy a padded insole (I think that is what it is called)
Maybe something in this link will help

Once you have shin splints there's nothing to do except wait until they go away. meanwhile upgrade your sneakers anyway. they're always improving them and 5 years old is old, regardless of how much you wore them. Make sure you have the right kind. I recommend a specialty store that tests your gait. I just got new running shoes from Jack Rabbit. Before that I had been to an orthopaedist for physical therapy and he recommended new balance walkers - a specific model that I don't remember. Padded insoles are good too.0
